How to upgrade Sharepoint to SQL 2000

Installing SQL 2000 on your SBS 2003 server. As always you must have a working backup before you proceed. Put the Premium Technology CD in your CD player and have a look at the first screenshot. Choose 'Install Microsoft SQL Server 2000'. Note that if you run this from SBS 2003 Premium Technologies the extract window will show, if you install SQL 2000 from Gold media the SQL installer will start immediately. Click continue and ignore this warning. Click next to continue setup Be sure that local computer is selected and click next. Select 'Upgrade, remove, or add components to an excisting instance of SQL server'. Click next. Enter your CD Key. This is the same key as you used for the initial installation of your SBS 2003 server. Select the Sharepoint instance for the upgrade. Note that you should not try to upgrade the Monitoring instance, this is not supported! Select 'Upgrade your existing installation'. Check 'Yes, upgrade my programs'. Click yes to install additional components. If you click no you will not be able to use Full Text Search in Sharepoint! Most important is that you check 'Full Text Search'. In addition to this I always install 'Management Tools', that includes Enterprise Manager, Profiler and Query Analyzer. If you want Help online you should also check 'Books Online'. Setup knows enough, click next. Setup is installing several components for you. Setup requires that you reboot your server. Click finish to reboot your server.

I have SQL server with all latest services packs installed running several databases.
Do I still need to do the full installation of SQL as described to upgrade my sharepoint? I'm just concerned it might mess up my current installation.

Hi Paul,

If you want to upgrade Sharepoint you need to follow the steps in the document but only for the Sharepoint instance. Nothing to worry about, I have done this many times even with multiple other instances running.

Perfect description (as always).
But now I also want to make the .pdf files I've stored searchable. At SMB Nation there was a presentation (which by the way STILL aren't available for downloading)
where you'd have to add somthing to get this to work..
maybe you know how to do this mariette?

I've been preparing to do this today and realised through reading that the screens in the article seem to indicate SBS 2003 without SP1.
I have SP1 installed and wondered if we should be working from the original install disks or the SP1 disks?
Hope this doesn't sound like a stupid question and clarifies the point for anyone else interested in doing this.

Paul,

On the SP1 disks (not the integrated media) you do not have the full SQL 2000 installation files. You should use the Gold media for that. After you have upgraded your Sharepoint instance you will need to use the SP1 media to upgrade SQL 2000 to SP4.

Is full text search capability the only advantage of upgrading SharePoint to full SQL? Would there be any point upgrading other instances eg SBS Monitoring?

Hi George,
If you are refering to the SQL Server Upgrade Wizard accessed from the All Programs menu "MS SQL Server - Switch" this is a wizard that transfers single 6.5 SQL Server databases to SQL 2000.

Is it just me or is the link not correct?

I mean if follow the steps i'm on the site with port 6120, this is why i could not find the full text search function.

If i go to sbserver:8081 i get the "correct website" showed above...

Nice article, but you might want to update it with instructions for doing this upgrade on a localized SBS2003. I ran into trouble after upgrading the instance and then trying to apply SP4 due to language incompatibilities. (There actually is a seperate readme on this on the premium disc.)

Hi, I did this process and seemed to go through without a hitch, but in the end I still seem to be running WMSDE not SQL Server 2000? Anyone with any ideas?
