Hi,

I've started a new thread for this as the iPhone part might be putting off people reading it.

I have worked through the set up of IMAP over SSL for SBS2003 premium using ISA 2004.
It works for me. I can use Outlook Express to test it from different computers across the internet and Mail on my iPhone also happily downloads my email.

However!

The other users can not use it. They receive a message saying the user name and password are incorrect.

At least this means they are talking to the server, we have tried different combinations of user name and been very careful entering passwords. They can all log in to RWW and also directly to OWA.
I have tried using Outlook Express with their credentials but still no luck.

To add to this mystery I tried creating a new user to test this out. It was a normal user with no special privileges except those to enable OWA and RWW access. Lo and behold no problem on either my iPhone or outlook Express, connected and set up immediately.

What is going on?

John -

There are a couple of things that could be going on with the IMAP logon issues you're experiencing. This post from the Exchange Team blog (http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2004/03/31/105275.aspx) has some of the reasons why IMAP/POP3 logons can cause problems. My recommendation would be to try to see if you can get a successful POP3 logon (locally if you can) for those accounts with IMAP logon problems. If you can't log in with POP3 (I suspect you'll have problems there since you have problems with IMAP), then you can dig into the Exchange post to see what might be going on.

First, you may need to specify the username in domain\username format for these accounts, especially if there's a discrepancy in the logon name versus the primary e-mail address for the user. If you have multiple aliases for a user, there's a good chance that Exchange might be identifying one of the other aliases as the "primary" for that user. As an example, I have a "sales @" alias for my primary user name, and in some cases, when I log into OWA and get a full URL displayed for some of the interactions, I see "sales" in the web path and not my logon name. Now, this hasn't caused a problem for me, but it can in some cases.

At any rate, see if the pointers in the Exchange article help resolve the IMAP logon issue and let us know what did the trick.

HTH...

Hi Eriq,

Thanks for the help. Had a hunch it was something to do with this and that article was very interesting.

I tried a few things suggested in it but eventually I changed the log on name to match the email and the alias. not too hard to do as the log on was the initials so no great change to initial and last name. Tried it using Mail on a mac and hey presto it worked. I need to grab the users iPhone now to test that but I don't see how it will differ.

This is something I've been changing for new users over the years anyway, hated the way the system was set up as too many users had the same initials! Not the best method in the world and I may do it for all the remaining users.

Thanks again and I'll let you know final success, still having a problem sending but that's to do with the bloomin Watchguard firewall we think. Another thread for that one to avoid confusion.

David.
