Hello,

I have problem with one SBS 2003 premium. The server was installed in 2006, and was working correctly until this Friday noon.

Then the partner told me, that server is inaccessible. I have restarted the server and it worked for approx. 2 minutes. After this, because the error returns, I was convinced that NIC failed and I replace it with a new one, but the problem still persists.

I looked all logs and there were no errors (except firewall errors, because I am disconnected from internet modem).

I don’t know what to do. Any idea?

Thanks for support.

Hi Elvis,

I don't understand what kind of a problem you have with your server.

Mariette, thank you for Your quick support.

When I start the server, it works normally (I can browse everything from client computers), but after a minute or two, it becomes unreachable. All the services are running normally (I think so). In the event viewer I can’t see errors or events of stopped services.

That looks like a hardware problem with some cable or switch.

I know, but I have changed the NIC, I brought the server at home, I’m using my computer as a client and I’m using my cable (crossover without switch). I don’t know what else to do.
Now it appears it is working for a long time – 15 minutes. I’m using the old configuration – original from Friday. I have no words.
Now I’m testing with the ping and I am surprised, because from the client I can ping the server, but from the server I can’ ping the client.

Hi Elvis,

Please, post an ipconfig /all from the server and a workstation. Open a command prompt by opening Start -> Run from the Start Menu and type cmd. From the command prompt type ipconfig /all >ip.txt. Attach this file to your answer.

Hello,
Here I’m posting the IP configuration from the server and the client. As you can see, the client configuration arrives form DHCP correctly. Yesterday it worked for 12 hours, but when I connected it to the original network it stopped. Because of this I suspect problems with the switch or one computer on the network. I am still perplexed why the server yesterday first didn’t work at my home. Now I’ll test the configuration for 1 hour or 2.
I don’t know what to do.

PS: The BPA reports the problem with Task Offload. OK, this is a network thing, but why was it working in the same configuration until Friday? Last time the server was updated Sunday. Why it worked from Sunday to Friday?

Hi Elvis,

The server's ipconfig is not good at all. The external nic doesn't have a gateway and NetBIOS over TCP/IP isn't disabled. Can you confirm that the internal nic is connected to a hub/switch that also has the workstations connected to it, and that the external nic is connected to the modem/router? Also, an ipconfig/all from a domain connected workstation would do better. Have you run CEICW at all and choose the right network diagram?

I have ISA installed on server. For this reason I have disabled NetBios over TCP/IP, and NIC is connected directly to PPOE modem.
Internal NIC and all workstations are connected on the same Switch.
I run CECIW and I choice the right network diagram

It Works!!!

I don't know what to say. The only thing I change was the Task Offload (and I am sure, that this is not a solution). Today I connected the server to his original network; in the beginning I connected one workstation to the server with a crossover cable, and it works! Then I changed the cable to the second workstation, and it worked! After this I connected the server to the switch, I also connected the two previously tested workstations, and it worked again! In the end I connected the entire network and (I don't know how) it worked.
Case closed !!!
Thanks to all for your support.
