A couple years ago, I helped a small company install Windows SBS on a crusty old server. After some business issues, the server wasn't used for several months.

Now, when the server is booted, it takes maybe an hour to get past "preparing network connections". I know this is usually a DNS issue.

Also, I cannot log into the domain admin account using the password I used before, or with my personal account. I'm fairly sure of the password, and I doubt anyone would know how to change this password except me. I can log in using the "directory services restore mode" but if I understand correcty that uses the local SAM database, and could be a different password than in AD.

Also in the directory services restore mode, the computer is VERY slow. Like takes a minute to respond to a mouse click.

I need to somehow go back and find some emails in the Exchange database as part of a lawsuit - what's the shortest way to get there?

Thanks if you can help!

There are 3rd party tools that allow you to extract mail directly from a *.edb file (exchange store). Is that what you need?

Possibly. I suppose then I'd have to have another Exchange server to use the files. What are some of these tools? Any free?

I have used a tool in the past and that was certainly not free but I don't remember the name. Those tools are expensive, very expensive. Another option is that you install the server with the same netbios and domain name in a virtual machine and then mount the Exchange Stores. That way you can easily extract all mail. Is a little work but it is free and can be done within 4 hours.
