I understand that SBS 2008 has improved backup and Restore, what are the improvements on 2003 and can you restore to different hardware including different raid controller?

Thanks

I know what they have added incremental backup (copies only changes i.e. one slide in a PowerPoint) - same as Vista. This saves a lot of time as pre 2008 days it would do a full daily backup regardless of it anything had changed or not.

I assume you can restore from another hard disk on a raid controller but don't hold me to that.

The backup tool in SBS 2008 is not meant to be used to move to other hardware. You will need to migrate.

Ouch....  What happens in a disaster hardware failure scenario when one needs to restore a failed server onto replacement hardware which could be slightly different? (Like a motherboard replacement)

It is to really to tell. We have not dealt with such a scenario yet but no doubt there will be a solution. We have started to write articles about many, many issues with SBS 2008. Our first docs will explain how to migrate from 2003 to 2008 but please be patient...

the loss of NTBACKUP is literally DISGUSTING!  I have clients in the medical and accounting field that need to use tape and not this crappy HD imaging and many just bought 400 or 800GB Ultriums and now have to get 3rd party s/w to use their tapes.  Tape is still needed for those who  are REQUIRED to take backup offsite and I am sorry but a HD doesn't cut it, drop it and you are toast.

Issues with 2008 I am REALLY pissed about
1) loss of NTBACKUP
2) loss of Outlook license included with CAL
3) increased price
4) loss of ISA

What improvements were added?
1) raise the RAM limit from 4GB

hhhhhmmmmm, some tradeoff.  We now have to sell Backup Exec, Outlook and a firewall (Untangle is currently our choice) ALONG with a product whose price went up noticeably....IN A DOWN ECONOMY.

I urge Microsoft to take SOME lessons from MAC.....speaking of, how do they have and easy setup from the iPhone but the makers of Activesync cannot do the same for WM6?

Mark,

I understand your comments very well. SBS 2008 Backup is really an improvement to SBS 2003. It uses image based backups and those are much faster and more reliable compared to what we did in SBS 2003. SBS 2008 backup can make multiple incremental backups per day. Because those are incremental they are most of the time small and quick.

Before Christmas (maybe even a lot earlier*) I will have a SBS 2008 'Backup and Restore' document ready with every detail of a restore of your server in the case of a disaster or just restoring individual files.

Nevertheless I understand what you wrote and most of it I agree but we have to live with it.

* depends on some clients how want to move to SBS 2008 before the end of this year
