Can someone please answer a silly question.

We need to give contractors an email address on the SBS domain however they are not users on the server and don't need to be. We need to give them a email address contractor@sbsdomain.com.au and automatically forward the mail on to an external account contractor@hotmail.com, no need to keep a copy on the SBS server.

If I create a mail enabled "contact" in the "Active Directory Users and Computers", created Exchange alias, "Modify", SMTP, Enter the email address contractor@hotmail.com.

If the email address
contractor@sbsdomain.com.au exists in the "contact" email addresses list will email sent to contractor@sbsdomain.com.au automatically be forwarded on to contractor@hotmail.com ? Is there anything else required to accomplish this? Or are you required to still create a user and tick the "forward to" and enter contractor@hotmail.com as it would now appear in the GAL?

Thanks in advance

No nothing else is required. You do not need to set up a user account nor use up a CAL. What you did, creating a contact and forwarding the email, is the correct solution. As a Contact, the account should show up in the GAL. Might take a little time to propogate to it.

Another question?

I setup a contact and now mail sent to contractor@ourdomain.com.au is forwarded automatically to contractor@hotmail.com, all works good no problem. My question is it possible to CC a copy of the mail sent to contractor@ourdomain.com.au to a user, user@ourdomain.com.au?

Thanks in advance

John,

You could always create a new distribution group containing the new contact you have created and the user you wish to receive a copy of the email. Then just forward the emails to this distribution group.

Thanks Phil,

Yes that would work. If I was to create the address contractor@ourdomain.com.au on the distribution group and give the contact a different address contractor_forward@... that should work.

Thanks for the Idea

I just set this up as mentioned and when I send an email from outside of the network, the email gets bounced with the following:
Reporting-MTA: dns;remote.XXXX.com
Received-From-MTA: dns;ccccc.wwwwwwws.com
Arrival-Date: Thu, 6 Nov 2008 23:02:32 -0500
Final-Recipient: rfc822;support@YYYYY.net
Action: failed
Status: 5.1.1
(yes, I masked the url's above)

From inside the network this is the error:
The email account does not exist at the organization is was sent to....

Any ideas?

Follow up:
I added a line to the email settings and it looks like this:
x400 c-US; a= ;p-xxx; o=Exchange...

I now get this error:
A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between servers or to be forwarded between two recipients...

Hi John,

You did something wrong. You need to create a new CONTACT for the external email account, not a new User.
