Hello,

By different customers with SBS 2003 servers it happen that they recieve undeliverable error emails from 'System Administrator' after we restart the server. This emails are related to emails that they sent weeks or months ago. It seems that this emails stick untill a restart of the server.

Someone the same experience and know what's the cause of this?

Erik, you are not alone, we see this too. For the moment I get delivery reports since we have lost some important messages.

Like you, the messages are not visible in the server queue's but they must be somewhere!

Sadly I can't offer any advice.

You could try the SolarWinds Exchange Monitor (free download) from here:

It lists more queues that the Exchange System Manager but I don't know if that will help.

I've seen this again this morning - the issue actually appears after you restart the SMTP service - which of course happens on a system restart. I've found nothing on the internet that refers to this yet.

For the moment I am considering setting up a timed task to restart the service once or twice a day e.g. 12:00 and 00:00.

The SolarWinds monitor, while it is useful, doesn't show any light on this issue since it doesn't see the messages until the service is restarted.

Edit: I found a couple of links that might be of use:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998772.aspx

http://forums.msrportal.com/showthread.php?t=22181

so I've made the GlitchRetry change and set the SMTP service to restart twice a day: lets see what happens...

I have seen this on two of my SBS boxes (of the 15-20 i look after)....only thing i can see so far as a pattern is that they both have Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE). Its the latest version, 6.

Have you guys got this installed?

Andy,

No, I don't use Symantec. On one server were this happen McAfee Groupshield is installed, on other servers AVG is installed.

@ Robin: thanks for the responce. I'm going to try your solution shortly.

We use Sophos - so that makes four different out of four installations...

Bugger. There goes my theory.

Its a horrible thing, it makes a mail server untrustworthy. If you don't get a return then you have to assume the mail has been delivered....then you get a return 2 months later and suddenly the client who rang up swearing, saying you must not have sent it, turned out to be right....

I've had a hard time explaining it to the clients involved.....just how do you say 'i have no idea why this happened'.....

Quite agree - I've been getting antsy with a customer for not responding to my requests for information, then you learn maybe weeks later that it never got sent...

Apart from the above I've got no better solution at the moment. You'll understand that I am cautious about disabling all my workarounds now until we see a guaranteed solution to the problem...
