Please excuse my ignorance... I'm trying to learn as quickly as possible...
I'm running SBS 2003 Standard.  From inside my network (192.168...) all of the components of RWW work perfectly.  From outside, all is well except for Remote Desktop.  When trying to connect (to workstation or server) throguh RWW I get "The client could not connect to the remote computer.  Remote connections might not be enabled..."  Like I said earlier, connecting to these machines is fine from inside the network.  On my firewall I have ports 3389, 4125, and 443 open via TCP protocol.  Thanks in advance to any help you all may be able to provide.

To make this work reliably you need a static IP address. (You can use a dynamic IP address but you will always need to know what it is before you try to connect so static is better)

If you havent got a static IP you need to talk to your ISP. They will normally assign you a block of 4 addresses the middle 2 of which are usable. Conventionally the first is your ADSL router the second can be used for VPN etc..

Start a VPN session, by running the Connection manager Setup. If you dont have connection manger setup the simplest way is to use the utility that SBS provides, copy this onto a Floppy Disk or USB stick, and run it on your remote PC. You can also define a VPN link manually in Windows with the target being your System.

The Firewall will need to pass traffic (for 443, 4125, through to your servers External NIC).
You will also have had to run CEICW and specifiying an external address (FQDN) for your Server. If you dont have a published FQDN but do have a static IP address then this will do too.

To get an FQDN you will need to talk to your ISP, conventionally this could be 'VPN.yourdomain.com' but its up to you it doesnt really matter. The Static IP address should the IP address of your ADSL modem.

Once you have all this in place & VPN started you will be able to connect by using the https://server/remote

Try that as see how you get on.

Hi James,

So you can successfully remote into a workstation from the server, right? If you use http://servername/remote from a workstation, can you then connect to another machine?

Yes.  Remote desktop from RWW from inside the network works great... It's just trying from outside.  From the outside I do have a static IP in and it all works great for Exchange, OWA, and RWW (except RDC).

Hi James,

Double check the router if it is properly forwarding port 4125. Does the router provide logs?

Ok... I'm an idiot!  When you said "forwarding" that hit a light bulb!  I opened the port, but didn't specifically forward it to the server.  I fixed that and it is now working great!  Thanks to all for your help and getting me to just look a little closer.
