will you be able to do some type of backup, then a new install on your existing hardware, then some kind of restore?

You only need new hardware if it's not 64 bit or will you need a spare box to move things around anyway?

Stewart -

There will be some type of migration solution for moving to Cougar on your existing 64-bit hardware. I'm sure (but do not know for certain) that Jeff Middleton will come up with some type of modifications to his Swing documentation to handle this scenario, but it's way too early to know for certain what the end result will look like. What I can say for certain is there will be no "in-place upgrade" to Cougar.

Also, just because you've got 64-bit hardware now (I've been rolling out 64-bit hardware for a couple of years to my clients) doesn't mean that it will necessarily do a good job of running Cougar. Kinda like XP to Vista, there are going to be significantly different hardware requirements, so existing hardware might not really be appropriate for running Cougar. Again, time will tell for sure, but don't get your hopes up that every one of your existing 64-bit boxes will make a good Cougar machine.

I can see it will be a big unknown. I had always figured my servers would not run 64 bit because if you look on the Intel web site at the sSpec numbers of mine there are notes that say "not enabled for EM64 technology". In fact, dozens of them say that.

But I knew that my motherboards and chassis were certified for 2003 64 bit, so I emailed Intel tech support to find out which processors I needed to swap mine out with.

The answer I got back was that the info on the Intel web site was incorrect, that all 800 mHz FSB processors are enabled for 64 bit. The tech thanked me for pointing out all those mistakes in the sSpec designations to their attention. LOL

Whether my hardware will operate the 64 bit OS as Intel claims or not is something I suppose I will have to find out the hard way!!

If Intel can't keep straight what is what on the 64 bit scene, it has to be a big mystery for the rest of us.

I have to disagree.  64-bit x86 is hardware mature and is not going to change.  cougar will run fine on any 64 bit hardware provided it's fast enough(i'm guessing 1.8 ghz dual core or more) and no less than 4 gigs of ram and 250 gigs of hard disk..
