Can you dedicate a computer to testing Windows Server code name Cougar with the following minimum system requirements?
  • 64 Intel or AMD PC with 2.66 gigahertz (GHz) processor
  • 4 GB of physical memory
  • DVD drive
  • Single network adapter
  • at least 60 gigabytes (GB) of free disk space
  • a display adapter with 128 megabytes (MB) (for Windows Aero compatibility)
  • an broadband externally visible Internet connection
  • a router
  • a domain name (The domain name can be an existing one that you own or you can use the Get a Domain Name wizard technology within Windows Server code name Cougar to purchase a new Internet domain name.)
So once they go gold and get rid of the debugging code in there it looks like dual core 1.8 ghz and tons of hdd and ram are the order of the day.  Considering IME 2 gigs is really the comfortable minimum for 2k3 4 gigs for 2k8 is about right(for a comfortable minimum.  2k3 will run inside of a gigabyte and 2k8 will probably run inside of 2 gigs but i would double those up).

We won't know what the final system requirements will be until MS releases them. The requirements you post are specifically for this specific portion of the beta and may have no bearing on the final requirements. Bottom line, if you're thinking about buying hardware specifically to run Cougar, hold off until MS releases official specs for the product. As with anything from an MS perspective, though, minimum requirements aren't necessarily real-world requirements.

IME the actual requirements for the best baseline performance aren't to far from the betas. Also anytime you see specs form MS in terms of ram you can double it for the best baseline usage. I'm going to be specing servers or 4 gigs for cougar..as right now i am specing 2 gig servers for small clinets and it keeps the machines form getting into memory pressure issues which they routinely do with 1 gig setups.

Actually, the baseline specs for SBS 2003 are 512MB, not 1GB. But they also recommend a 750MHz processor. You can technically run SBS on that, but it's not pretty. The recommended specs are better, but it depends on usage. Most clients I work with have their SBS implementations maxed out, especially if there's any database app running on the box.

It will be interesting to see what the actual specs turn out to be and then what people are going to try to run with that. We'll probably have a better idea what "real world" is going to look like about 6 months after Cougar releases...

you're misunderstanding me..i'm not quoting ms's specs i'm using the realistic specs..

as i stated earlier:
Considering IME 2 gigs is really the comfortable minimum for 2k3 4 gigs for 2k8 is about right(for a comfortable minimum. 2k3 will run inside of a gigabyte and 2k8 will probably run inside of 2 gigs but i would double those up).

I should have prefaced again with comfortable minimum..

I think its good that MS are finally getting the Specs right for the products. Even if it is only for BETA. Its about time they used "REAL WORLD" specs , because I dont think anyone looks at the minimum specs when quoting a server for a customer. The only time you need their min specs is in the exam. These days with servers and memory being so cheap, its no probloem quoting higher specs.
