I understand that in SBS 2008 Microsoft will not be supporting Tape Backup? Is this confirmed?

Looking ahead, has anyone got some input as to which Hard Drive and appropriate removeable catridges we should be looking at.

All our recent installs have been with Dell RD1000 SATA internal drive.

Would be good to have some feedback on other manufacturers.

Regards

Bigish

That is correct, Server 2008 no longer supports Tape as a possible backup solution. I personnaly prefer to use a SAN as a backup destination.

Symantec will be laughing all the way to the bank with this one then. Who on earth thought doing away with tapes was a good idea?

Its almost as stupid as car manufacturers replacing spare wheels with a can of mousse. Its fine until you have a big blow out or rip the tyre on a curb and then your stuffed!

What will happen when some one steals all your kit or the building burns down? Larger businesses can afford offsite SANs etc but this is a small business product! A 200/400Gb LTO tape is also only £13 and if you drop it carries on working.

Some SANs have USB capabilty which allows you to add a drive and it can take a backup of itself to that USB HDD.

Disk Backup is not that bad as others may think of. It’s speedy and recovering data is really quick considering the tape restoration. Anyway saying that all these won’t make the bad feeling of missing tapes. In Symantec Backup Exec 12D you can use external drivers connected via USB or fire wire as the backup destination. If necessary you can do the backup to remote destination as well. Look into the Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery software. I think Acronis True Image offer the similar options.

I have not used tape backup for at least five years now, always hated them, been let down too many times in the past.

Been using external hard drives to image the entire Server, all data files and even some Client computers, this is then replicated to other external mirror drives which are either kept in a Fire Safe or in an offsite location.

I can restore any data file for any of my clients from any location in a matter of minutes, no finding tapes etc. as multiple versions of every file is kept as well.

I restored a Server remotely last Boxing Day for a client after it suffered a RAID drive failure, one restore from the repository drive and a re-boot later and all was back up and running.

Tapes should be left where they belong in the 20th Century.

Mike, What app are you using to take the image of the systems? Does it do it live or require taking the system offline for the snapshot?

Thanks,
Brian
