Specifying a server for SBS 2008 Premium for an existing SBS 2003 Premium site that needs hardware upgrade. Currently 38 users. Could scale up to max of 60 users. Current storage is 8 x 36 gb 15 k rpm SCSI disks in RAID 5 Array with hot spare (192 gb useable 31 gb available). Server is over 5 years old and out of warranty. 2 scsi discs failed since last October.

Second server for SBS Premium SQL to be specified separately.
Back up will continue to be external USB SATA drives

I am considering either a Dell Poweredge 2950 III or HP Proliant DL 380 G5 with the following specs:

Dual Quad Core Xeon E5420 2.5 ghz CPU's
16 gb 667 mhz 8 x 2 gb RAM
RAID 6 (Dell) or RAID 5 (HP)
8 x 146gb 10k rpm SAS-SCSI 2.5" Hot Plug Drives
Redundant Power Supply

I am not sure if 16 GB ram is enough for SBS 2008 with 50 users +/-

Any suggestions?

With the spec's you have there I think that the configuration would be ample to even run a single box with SQL on it (either installed with SBS or VM'ed). Probably still even overkill.

I think you could go just single Quad core (maybe go a slightly higher spec single Quad, you can always add later). Perhaps even drop back the RAM, 12GB i'd say should be enough even with SQL running on this box.

If you really want to keep SQL on seperate hardware, for the SBS box I'd definately drop one of the processors, and go back to 12GB, 8GB may even be enough just for SBS 2008 with no SQL on it.

For 38 users any of the above is plenty, remember you can always add another processor and some RAM down the track.
