Hi all. We now have an Exchange Server 2007 installed on our network. I have users with HTC Mobile phones wanting to connect with ActiveSync over the air. What confuses me is in the 'Configure Server' settings there is 'server name' stated? What do i put in here just the Public IP or does it have to be https://Public IP/owa ? Where in Exchange do i foind the setting that shows server name? I know the Server 's computer nbame, it cannot be that easy as it is a .local domain setup.

Please help, thanks.

Use the "Web Server Name" that you entered when you created the self-signed certificate on the Configure Email and Internet Connect wizard (CEICW) unless of course you are using a purchased certificate. This is the name that your ISP holds (DNS A-record) that corresponds to the external IP address they issued you, give them a call to confirm. It's the same URL you would use to connect to OWA but drop the "HTTPS://" bit at the beginning.

Also, if you do have a self-signed certificate you need to install it on the HTC's. This is how I do it, but there may very well be better ways: First you need to export the certificate in DER Encoded Binary x.509 format; on a PC that you have already used successfully to read OWA open Internet Explorer and choose Tools > Internet Options > Content tab > Certificates button > Trusted Root Certification Authorities tab. > Locate your installed certificate > Click Export button to start the Certificate Export Wizard > choose DER Encoded x.509 and save the .CER file to desktop. Connect HTC with USB and use ActivSync to Explore folder structure, drag-drop .CER file somewhere sensible on the HTC i.e. My Docs. Unplug HTC and double click the certificate file on the HTC to install certificate. Done!phew. This avoids lots of head scratching later on and trawling event error causes.

Hi Simon thank you for your answer. Please note that it is not a Small Business Server and there was no CEICW as it was W2k3 and Exchange is seperate. The server certificate is not purchased and it is the computer name of the Exchange Server. However this name does not resolve remotely when i connect from outlook web access, so then it must be the 'public IP' given to me by my ISP as i can get in to owa with it. So i drop the https:// but what about the /owa at the end drop that too?

Additionally I am using an HTC S730 to add GPRS connection it gives me an error and ISP says i should enable PAP Authentiation but it is not shown in the settings of GPRS? Can you tell me with your experience with HTC what exactly is needed for this?

Thank you , looking forward to your reply.

The bit in CEICW I referred to is specific to the certificate creation and it looks like you have that under control already. As long as the certificate on the HTC is the same as the one on the server then your ok; remember, every time you update the one on the server you need to update the one on the handset too.

As far as I understand, you can drop the /OWA at the end and the SSL tick box defines the https:// bit so ensure that you have a tick in that box too. Aside from that, you need to resolve the public IP to a FQDN which might already have been organsied by your ISP and active in their DNS, give them a call. It is the FQDN that goes in the Configure Server box, minus the trailing dot i.e. servername.domain.net or something similar (note. this is externally resolved and not the .local domain).

The GPRS connection you mention is to do with the mobile operator and separate from your broadband ISP, often they have these details on their websites to help with configuring handsets; we use Vodafone and they send the settings over-the-air to the handset via SMS (i think!). I don't have much experience of the HTC you are using, I have used a similar model but it was a Mobile 5 system not a Mobile 6 like the S730's.
