First run complete on my own R2 server. Initial thoughts are good idea in principal. Reality is my server is now starting up with errors that weren't there before and network performance looks more like what you would expect off 100Mbps rather than gigabit ethernet. Will investigate further.

ive installed and run on all the servers i look after - no major problems reported - which i was definatley worried about.

it's all very well going through logs etc and making sure everything runs ok, but i dont know about you, i always get a bit more reassurance when a BPA tool tells me everything is good.

There were some useful informational items, and some warnings about some settings that were not ideal - and links to KB's about how to fix it (nothing knew to people familiar with BPAs)

One thing i would like to see is a lot of promotion - im still not sure why Microsoft dont publicise the Exchange and ISA BPAs - which are also very handy.

On the whole i am very pleased with it, A great tool.

Well done Microsoft :)

Well, I have just mailed out to almost 20,000 users the information about this BPA. There is not much more I can do to promote this tool :-)

I noticed that it complained about asp.net version 2.X.  It wants my websites to use version 1.X

Ken,

That is correct. By default all standard sites in SBS should run 1.1 and NOT 2.0.

Thanks for this info...
...By any chance, do you know if one exists for SBS 2000. I am about to upgrade my client to 2K3 but just wanted to analyze his current server before doing so.
Thank you,

Curtis,

No, such a tool does not exist for SBS 2000. BTW, the best way to upgrade is to Swing that SBS 2000 to a new SBS 2003. In place upgrading that old server is something you really don't want...

Hello,

Running the tool was easy, thanks.
It states our server needs to be upgraded to Sp1.
We thought this had been done, and in the system properties our's is indicated as "Microsoft Windows 2003 Server for Small Business Server Sp1".
What to think ? Should we download and run these 5 files  :
  • Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
  • Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Service Pack 1
  • Service Pack 1 de Microsoft Exchange Server 2003
  • Windows XP SP2 pour Déploiement des clients
  • Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1

Thanks for any help,

Jean-Jacques

Hello Jean-Jacques (Bonsoir!)

Can you check in add/remove programs if there is something listed like SBS 2003 SP1? Here are some articles that may help you:

Logs? What logs? - Where can I find the configuration, setup and installation log files from SBS 2003?:

Bonjour Mariette,

Quelle agréable surprise, compliments !

In fact, in the add/remove programm we've got Windows Server 2003 Sp1, but neither SharePoint, nore SBS 2003 Sp1.
The SBS Administration Programm files appear dated as 2003. But... Exchange is stated 7638.2 Service pack 2.

So what should we do ? Bypass Win2003 Srv Sp1, and Exchange Sp1 and  apply SharePoint and SBS Sp1 ?

Merci d'avance,

Jean-Jacques

Jean-Jacques,

I would install all service packs included in SBS 2003 SP1. If one is not needed you will be notified anyway.

Hi

On a server that has SharePoint Services Service Pack 3 installed, BPA tells us that "Windows SharePoint Services has not been updated for Daylight Savings Time", and that "Service Pack 2 for Windows SharePoint Services is not installed. Odd.

Simon,

That is indeed a bug. I will have a look if I can find the people responsible for this...thanks.

Hi

Another bug (?) - on a server that hasn't had WSUS upgraded from 2.0 to 3.0 yet, BPA tells you to see "Installing Windows Server Update Services 3.0 on Windows SBS 2003", but the link provided (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=77404) takes you to "Installing Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 on a Server Running Windows Small Business Server 2003"!

I think they probably meant to point at this article:

I like the tool but noticed several inconsistencies: First, having to change .Net Framework from Ver 2 back to ver 1.1.4322 is not fully explained as to what functionality this will provide that is not included in ver 2.0. Also, having made the change back to ver 1.1.4322 in IIS I still receive notification that Windows SBS backup is not using 1.1.4322 and SBS Monitoring is not using 1.1.4322 both of which point to the same IIS settings corrected previously. That DST patch had previously been installed uinder a different KB. I reinstalled the DST patche under KB933360 and that resolved the DST entry. What is not well documented is the TCP Chimney and TCPA entries being enbled. Where do you find documentation on these entries? Same applies to the entry for EDNS being enabled.

Overall, I like all the BPA's that Microsoft puts out.

Mike
