I'm running SBS 2003 SP1

Event Type:    Error
Event Source:    Service Control Manager
Event Category:    None
Event ID:    7022
Date:        07/07/2008
Time:        14:14:09
User:        N/A
Computer:    CERBERA
Description: The Remote Access Connection Manager service hung on starting.

Because this service fails to start, all the services that depend on it also fail (RRAS, firewall, ISA etc). The only dependency for this service is Telephony and that starts OK.

It's been happening on and off for ages and happens almost every time I reboot the server.  It's not so much a problem when I reboot the server locally as I can manually start the service, but it means I can't restart it remotely.

If I enable tracing on RASMAN will that actually show any errors when the service trys to start or does tracing only start logging info once the service is up and running?  What else can I use to find out what is causing it to hang?

Thanks.

Are you running SBS 2003 Premium with ISA?

I had the same issue with a Win2k / ISA / RRAS server. After talking to Microsoft about it and trying various things they couldn't work it out. In the end I tracked it down myself - ISA had put some entries in the Outbound / Inbound filters for the NIC in RRAS. A (ISA I think) update caused the issue to start. I removed the filters and all was OK again then.

I know you are running 2003 and it's SBS but I thought I would share the experiance just in case...

Thanks for the input but that doesn't seem to be the cause.

I've noticed that although I get the error above in the event log, the Remote Access Connection Manager service does actually start. I guess that although it is starting, it's taking so long that the dependent services fail.

I thought that by setting dependencies, the other services would wait until the original service had started before trying to start themselves?

Any other suggestions?

Hi Jamie,

Please, post an ipconfig /all from the server and a workstation. Open a command prompt by opening Start -> Run from the Start Menu and type cmd. From the command prompt type ipconfig /all >ip.txt. Attach this file to your answer.

Ip Config attached.

I'm running the BPA now and fixing a couple of errors it found (although nothing that would seem to obviously affect RAS).

SBS 2003 SP1 and Windows Server SP1 are both installed.  BPA recommends I install windows SP2.  SP2 seems to be more trouble than it's worth.  Do you recommend installing it?

Hi Jamie,

Ipconfig is looking good, but I am also interested in one of a workstation. W2k3 SP2 isn't a problem anymore. When you have installed it, you should run Microsoft Update for further fixes. What kind of hardware does the server have and which 3rd party programs are installed on it?

I have attahced the IPConfig for a workstation.

I've fixed all errors reported by BPA tool (apart from Win 2003 SP2 installation, I'll do that soon).  Everything else is fully patched and all up-to-date MS updates have been applied.

The server runs the following 3rd party apps:
AVG Enterprise 8 (I think I've made realtime scan exceptions for all the files/folders recommended on this site)
Back Up Exec System Recovery 8
APC Powerchute Business Edition
WinRar

The hardware is based on:
Tyan Thunder K8SD Pro MoBo
2 x 2.2Ghz AMD Opteron CPUs
Megaraid 320-2 SCSI controller attached to 4 x 75Gb Hitachi Ultrastar 10,000 rpm drives (for data)
1 x 120Gb SATA drive (for OS)
LSI Ultra320 SCSI attached to Sony Tape Drive (for backups)
2 x Broadcom NetExtreme 1Gb Server NIC's
1 x Smartlink 56k Modem
4 Gb PC3200 RAM
Tagen 420W PSU

Hi Jamie,

Is the Remote Access Auto Connection Manager service set to disabled on your server? The Remote Access Connection Manager service should be set to Manual.

It's set to Automatic on this server. The strange thing is, once the server has finsihed booting if I go in and check the Remote Access Connection Manager service it has actually started despite the event log message saying it hung on starting. It must have taken too long to start initially so the dependant ISA Server Control service failed, followed by the Firewall service, but then it must have eventually started.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try it this evening.

However, my understanding was that if a service is set to manual it does not start when Windows loads (although it can be initated later whenever it is required by the system). Therefore the ISA Server Control service (which is set to automatic and does initiate at start-up) will not load because it is dependant on Remote Access Connection Manager. But I've obviously misunderstood service configuration and I'm sure you'll put me right!

I've still not resolved this issue.
Remote Access Auto Connection Manager was disabled anyway but I set Remote Access Connection Manager to Manual.  Still having the exact same problem.

Any ideas?

Hi Jamie,

I think you should consider using our remote support services.
