Are you running WSUS 2.0 or 3.0? Look at this link: http://www.wsus.info/forums/lofiversion/index.php?t5866.html There are some errors with the BITS from which you cannot recover without removal and reinstallation of WSUS. I went throught this and tried in vain all the known and found remedies in MS Knowledgebase and Tech forums until it finally came down in my case to a proven scenario requiring a reinstall. At that point I elected to not reinstall WSUS 2.0 but to step up to the newer WSUS 3.0 which seems to have eliminated all those type problems. I'm not saying this is the scenario for you - google some of those error messages and try all the remedies and you may find your time wel lspent on an actual fix. Some of the people with this type problem have had cases that could be fixed. But some of the cases are proven to be unfixable. And I will say that I'm much happier with the WSUS 3.0 now. |

Hi Balaji,
If you would restore Exchange, it would overwrite the current store. As I am assuming that the server and thus exchange are running now. You will have to elaborate on what exactly you did.

Hi Marina
Ok here is the scenario. I have a system running mirroring for OS (sbs 2003) and Raid 5 for data. I had stored all my data and doc redirection in Raid5. Our deployment is very simple. When i had an issue my priority was to get my property management system up so i reinstalled the sbs and connected all users and got the system going. for the mails i conveted the ost to pst and an imported them to outlook so all are up and ruuning. Now for some users running office 2002 iam unable to find the ost also had some users just using OWA so iwant to retrive their mails. can i do the following.
1. install sbs on a diff machine
2. restore exchange backup
and retrive their mails.
regards
balaji

Hi Balaji,
The ost file is there since Outlook 2003, so no wonder you didn't find them on the machines that are running Outlook 2002. Which makes me wonder, why you didn't install Outlook 2003 on those machines, as you are licensed to do that.
There are a lot of articles on restoring exchange. But if you are going the route of installing sbs on a different machine for this, please make sure that that machine is never ever connected to the current network. Hi Marina
Thx for the advice. ihave installed sbs on a diff machine and retrived all mails . i will never ever connect it to my network its a standalone machine and will be reformatted and reused once this is overl.Ok i have licenses for office 2003. But all these machines are more than 5 years old so it had 2002 running on them when i took over so more of a lethargy from my side.I have approved budget for new machines which are supposed to be deployed next month. One more question if a machine isinfected with rootkit what happens when it is restored to a similar hardware with nt backup(system state and all).
Thx again
Balaji

Hi Balaji,
SBS comes with the Outlook 2003 license, so you don't even need the Outlook from Office XP.
If you don't know when the machine got infected with a rootkit, you will bring back that rootkit in the network if you restore it.

Hi Marina
All these machines were installed with office Xp when i took over and also lethargy from my side. My server was installed with wsus and patched uptodate also had symantec corp edition which did not find the rootkit. I ran an online scan with kaspersky which detected the rootkit i did speak about this to symantec support they had no answers. Anyway clean installed sbs and up and running now. I have installed 6 SBS boxes now but this is my first disaster recovery experirnce had quite a bit of tension but all ended well.
Many Thanx for your answers
Balaji
