I had a clients Intel Embedded RAID-5 get a bad hard drive and the RAID controller didn't function.
 
The whole RAID array configuration corrupted.
 
I had to dump the RAID, reinstall the OS and restore using BackupExec 11d from last tape.
 
I went through all the steps per Symantec for restore on sbs. Went into DSR mode, restored system state along with the C drive.
 
Reboot, nothing, got the C drive data but no AD, wizards were all broke, etc.
 
Both Symantec not being a help and time being a huge issue I formatted again and just setup from scratch. I restored the data volume successfully and added users. (10 users).
 
I knew this would cause problems with the workstations and the SIDs not matching the AD user accounts.
 
I put the server back in place today and they can get to what they need but of course the workstations are not seen by the server. I don't really want to take the workstations off the domain and backon becuase when I have done that in the past the profiles seem to run slow and quickbooks has problems and they cannot explain.
 
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Hi Matt,

Tricky issue... unless you restore the AD, you loose the SID

Have a look at the Swing Migration forum in this web site. They discuss a tool (Swing Migration) that allows you to upgrade a server without loosing the AD. It might (???) give you some ideas.

You might want to try to take one PC off & on the domain... It might solve your problem. I don't see why it would be slow after you do that.???

tricky it is - with our clients its always a tricky issue.
 
this was the first attempt to restore a sbs 2003 with disaster recovery situation and I must say I'm not impressed. I don't know it was lack of experience dealing with this or backupexec isnt as good as I thought it was.
 
has anyone successfully restored AD from backupexec in SBS 03?

I don't know about BE, but the SBS backup will do it without a problem.
