Hi all,

I am on a roll today! 3rd question in this forum ... all connected, but all different...

I am just wondering what is the best practice procedure for going from one NIC to 2 NICs on a SBS. I have attempted this several times in the past and always had an issue or another.

Mariette, Marina, maybe we need a nice PDF procedure in the download section for this???

I guess there are a couple of possible scenarios:

1. Old NIC = new LAN, New NIC = new WAN
2. Old NIC = new WAN, New NIC = new LAN

with or with change of IP address
A. Old IP range = new LAN range
B. Old IP range = new WAN range
C. Old IP range = is discarded; LAN & WAN get new IP range
These choices are necessary as sometimes one like to use the (old) GBit card for the LAN and the (new) MBit card for the WAN or vice versa

Anyway, enough rambling, how do you do this %$@#! change over?

Cheers

Alexandre Michel

Hi Alexandre,

Add the new nic. Now you will first have to decide if you want to change the internal IP range, or if you want to change the external IP range and thus the router configuration.
Changing the internal IP range is easy as the Change IP wizard will do it for you and it will change DNS, WINS and DHCP at the same time.
You then configure the internal nic first, and give it a blank gateway. Disconnect the internal nic from the router and connect it to the hub/switch.
Configure the external nic and set the gateway to the router IP and DNS to the internal server IP.
Run CEICW. If that succeeds, connect the external nic to the router and check if you can get out on the internet. On the clients issue ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew.
Run SBS BPA.
