Hi there,

just looking for general comments/help.

have a netgear FVS318 Prosafe Firewall Router configured as the gateway. The router is not set up to allocate DHCP.

Attached to the router is a 24 port switch and the server/clients run off this via structured cabling.

problem i'm having is that on a few occassions the router has been accessible from the external side (ie i can log onto the router from outside the building) but it cannot see the server and vice versa (this means no email or internet for the clients or indeed the server).

To resolve this i've ended up having to just reboot the router and everything goes back to working fine. I've also upgraded the router to the latest release of firmware but have had to reboot a couple of times. There doesn't seem to be any particular set of events that cause this problem and i'm getting to the point where i'm considering swapping out the router.

Additionally, if i look at attached devices the router shows up a number of the clients (which should be getting their ip addresses from the server).

i'm assuming the ip address of the router should be fixed (which it is)
the ip address of the switch should be fixed (which it is)
and the ip addresses of the clients should rely on DHCP with the server as the gateway?

Any help much appreciated.

the early FVSs had a hardware problem (not addressable by firmware, AFAIK) where what it perceived as an attack (hits to many unexpected ports) would put the unit into such a state.

Sticker on the bottom has hardware version.

dunno who Nick is but I'll let you get away with it :-)

IP address of switch hey? Managed switch, you may not have a router problem at all.

and to clarify: SBS should be supplying all IP addresses to DHCP clients, but in doing so (in a single NIC situation, which sounds right for you) the router should be default gateway.

If things are not behaving in this manner DO NOT manually adjust anything. You need to run both the 'change server IP address' wiz and the CEICW.

my apols mick  'n' and 'm' are just too close for my fat fingers.

I'm sure it's the router that's the problem. If i reboot the switch it does not resolve the issue whereas if i reboot the router it does.

obviously as the router is the gateway i'm now assuming it's showing the connected devices because of that (yes it's single nic). Additionally, DHCP is definitely off on the router and switch so clients should only be picking up addresses from the server.

maybe i just need to bite the bullet and replace the router

thanks again for your help
