Hi all:
The Configuration is an SBS2k3 Standard, 2NICs and LinkSys RV042 dual Wan router. The RV042 is setup in SHARE mode for the Cable and DSL WANs. The router has 4 Lan ports. Two of the 4 ports are occupied.
Lan1 is connected via Fixed Ip 192.168.1.11 to SBSS2k3. Lan2 is connected via Fixed IP 192.168.1.12 to BOS 4.5 (NT4), 2 NICs server with Proxy server2. When the Wan port switches between Wan1 and Wan2 the SBS2k3 can no longer access the internet via IE6. Yet I can log into this web site and other apps which open private ports continue to work using the SBS2k3. The BOS NT4 has no problem continuing to operate.

When this problem occurs sometimes DNS monotoring fails the recursive test.

The DNS forwarding is set up as follows.
WAN1 DNS
WAN2 DNS
WAN1 DNS
WAN2 DNS
192.168.1.1

Have you encountered this problem on your RV082?

If you force the router to use Wan1 the SBSk3 works.
If you force the router to use Wan2 the SBSk3 does NOT work.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What is the IP address 192.168.1.1 doing in your forwarders?

regards

Since the router supplies DNS at the Gateway,  I added just in case the DHCP on Wan1 changes which also changes the DNS for WAN1.

It did not make any difference!

Hi Fred,

Can you please post the ipconfig/all from the server? I think you will want to remove all forwarders in DNS server, thus also the router IP.

Hi Fred,

Change the subnetmask on the internal nic to 255.255.255.0. The internal nic is connected to a hub/switch and the external to that router, right?
Rerun CEICW and clear all dns forwarders, especially if you have two different ISP providers.

I don't have any problem with the RV082 (double wan 8 poorts). I just cleared the forwarders in DNS server and didn't even have to change anything else on the SBS (a SBS 2000 in this case).

Thanks Marina:

I will try what you suggest for the forwarding.

Why should I reduce the mask/range of the 10.x.x.x internal IP's that are connected to a switch to 255,255,255,0 from 255,0,0,0?
The workstations for the SBS2k3 occupy 10.0.0.x range. The servers are in the 10.0.1.x range.

Are you concerned about a limitation in the router?

Thanks for the info on the forwarding.

I will let you know if it works!

Kind regards

Fred

As allways, Marina, you were right! Removing the forwarders in DNS fixed the problem. I do not know why it should but, it worked! If you know, why an explanation would be very much appreciated. Does it automatically performed a DNS request to the Router gateway?

If you would like. I can take some screenshots of what I had to set up to make the RV042 so that you can add it to your site.

I did not change the masking for 10.x.x.x.

Many thanks again to all

Fred

Hi Fred,

The router has the DNS numbers for each connection. Because they are from different ISP's, you don't need the forwarders in SBS. SBS is routing all external DNS requests to the router.
