Exchange store was installed in a partition with 40GB but after a year client has only 16% left, I am getting this error after runnig "SBS Best practices Analizer tool":

D: has 16% free space remaining (less than 20% of free space available). You should consider adding more storage or removing unnecessary files.

Can I use a partition utility to resize the hard disk utility to rezice the hard disk?
(sbs partitiones as follows:
Total RAID Hard disk:  450GB
System in c: with 232GB
Exhange  in D:  with 40GB
Customer Data in E: with 195GB)

Don't think you can when it is in use. I was also wondering about this and whether if you run out of space whats the best practice to sort it out. I always think that its best to have two huge drives and put them into a RAID 1 array then have the standard Windows Backup running as well. If you run out of space possibily install larger capacity disks, re-install OS and restore from a backup. Scattering data across partitions make things more complicated I believe as you end up being faced with complications such as yours unless you are some sort of expert in looking into the future ;-).

Kieran.

It is obvious the partition can’t be resized when in use. But if we boot the server in “save mode” and stop all Exchange services we may be able to use a partition utility like “Partition magic” from Symantec or “Disk Partition Manager” from Acronis or “Paragon Partition Manager” from Paragon to rezice the partition. We have used this utilities with Windows 95, 98, XP and Vista but My question can they be used on a Exchange partition? and second question can we take from drive C: (system partition) to add to drive D: (partition holding Exchange)? Drive C: has 250GB and used only 40GB.

Thank You,

Hi Enrique,

You would need the server version of such a program and you would need to have a full backup in case something goes wrong. Resizing with such programs is not supported by Microsoft, so if you get a problem, you will need to get support from those third party vendors.
But why don't you just move the Exchange databases and logs to the other partition? No need for resizing this way.
