I am having an issue getting to My Company Web and Monitoring on my Win2003 SBS.  When I try to go to either site I get the following error:

Server Application Unavailable

The web application you are attempting to access on this web server is currently unavailable.  Please hit the "Refresh" button in your web browser to retry your request.

Administrator Note: An error message detailing the cause of this specific request failure can be found in the application event log of the web server. Please review this log entry to discover what caused this error to occur.

The IIS Server is running as are the 4 main Web sites including Sharepoint Admin and CompanyWeb.  I don't know where to find the application event log of the web server.

Some background:

On Aug 18th we tried to do an upgrade of SQL2000 to SQL2005 that came with Win2003 SBS R2.  The upgrade failed because we had not uninstalled SQL2000 first (we had wanted to run them together for a bit).  However, .Net 2.0 did get installed.  After the failed install the Event Log starting filling up with the following error:

#50070: Unable to connect to the database STS_Config on RMTSBS\SharePoint. Check the database connection information and make sure that the database server is running.

I didn't realize this till the next day and I did some quick research and ended up shutting down the Sharepoint Timer Service.  This stopped the error and that was all I cared about at the time.  I think this happened because the failed install had put the two SQL Services in Manaul mode and then they didn't restart when the server restarted.  A few days later we did the uninstall of SQL2000 and the install of SQL2005 and it went fine.  We are running a Time recording application under SQL2005 and it runs OK.

Over the last week I was battling an issue with RWW and ran the Best Practices Tool on Marina's advise.  It indicated that several Web sites were using the wrong version of ASP .Net and should be using Ver 1.1.4322.  I changed the Remote Web site to use this version and RWW started working again right away.  I also changed the ASP .Net for Backup, CompanyWeb, Monitoring as well as per the Tool but CompanyWeb and Monitoring still don't work.

Anyway, I am now starting to want to use the MyCompany Web and Monitoring and I can't get them to go.  I can start both the SQL Instances and have now set them to Auto start.  I have also restarted the Sharepoint Timer Service and it isn't generating any errors.  I can use the SQL Management Studio to logon to both SharePoint and Monitoring instances but I have to use Run As and start Studio as THE domain administrator to be able to login.

I followed a similar thread to this posted on 1/12/2008 but I saw no final resolution.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Dave,

You could try uninstalling those two components and reinstalling them. Do this from Add/Remove Programs "Windows Small Business Server 2003" - Change/Remove.

This will bring up a dialog box that will allow you to remove/installed individual components of SBS 2003. Look for Monitoring and Intranet.

Of course, any data you had in your CompanyWeb will be lost should you uninstall the "Intranet" but your thread implies you haven't any data yet.

I've never had to restore intranet using this method before but it has worked a treat in the past when we've had problems with the monitoring service.

Joe,

Thanks for the reply.

I'm a bit nervous about doing what you suggest on my production server so I am going to set up a test server with identical hardware, restore an image of my current production server onto it and try what you suggest.  This will take me a few days but I will let you know if it worked.

Thanks,

Dave
