Hi Everybody,

I have an SBS2003 Server on the bench that requires a drive upgrade as the old ones are nearly full. So the system is working? I have tried the preferred method, new drives, install OS, patch to SP1 as per the instructions from this site. (This method has worked every time in the past).

After restore the system fails to Reboot with the message that there is a software fault and to "load DLLS for HAL". Having assumed that I had missed something I repeated the exercise but with the same end result. On closer inspection although the backup has never reported any errors I notice that the Exchange Logs haven't been written to the Exchange DB for some months, an action I thought occurred during a successful backup. Also there is no Exchange Hive included on the backup and I am wondering if the System State has been backed up properly although the backup logs indicate it has, in fact the backup logs indicate no problems.

The backup media that I am using is a USB hard disk, the data is backed up off-site, the USB device is for local restore only.

Has anyone seen this before or got any ideas on this one as I'm scratching my head.

All suggestions gratefully received.

Mike...

Hi Mike,

If the original installation on the smaller drive(s) is still functioning you should be able to transfer the image of that drive to the larger drive (using Ghost or similar) and then boot from the new larger drive. If you are using a different drive controller you might have to install the drivers on the old drive before taking the image.

Tony.
