Hey everyone,
I've recently performed a server migration from one old old old small business server to a new one. There are still a few quirks to work out, but this is one of the most pressing concerns for me. The old small business server had a companyweb site that was mainly used for faxes, but other things as well. We also had an external site that contained links for Remote Desktop Connections, Outlook Email, and the companyweb. This was accessible through a dyndns domain name, and the companyweb was of course only accessible through that portal, or in the office by just entering companyweb in the web browser. By the time we tried moving over the companyweb, it was too late to use any of the backup tools that I could find, because a new blank companyweb had replaced it. However, the old external website was still there. Frustrated with my backup and restore attempts, I made a last ditch effort, completely stupid. I copied over the entire inetpub folder from the old server to the new one. Everything went down of course, both internal and external. Since, we have reinstalled the sharepoint services (gave us a companyweb and an external, but not our companyweb from the old server. The external ite was the same as it was on the old server, but all the links were broken,) tried to modify the external website to work (now the website object in the IIS services in server management that I thought was the external site is gone, however the external site is still up), and restored the old server from a backup from before the migration. The servers are still on the same domain.
I have three questions regarding this situation.
1) Would the following plan work, and what specific procedures would I have to use to execute it?
- Reinstall the sharepoint component on the new SBS.
- Shutdown the sharepoint services on the new SBS.
- Start the sharepoint services on the old SBS. (The old SBS was recently restored from an older backup that contains the files before the migration)
- Run a backup utility on the old SBS of the sharepoint services.
- Shutdown the sharepoint services on the old SBS.
- Bring the backup over to the new SBS.
- Start the sharepoint services on the new SBS.
- Restore the backup from the old SBS.
2) Is there a better way of doing this?
3) Is there some place I can go for a little sharepoint 101? I'm not quite sure I even understand how the whole thing was configured in the first place, let alone where the files were and what settings I would have to use to recreate a system like this.
Please remember that I'm in no way a proffessional, but I have a generally good understanding of how the server works. Any help, even some KB articles or little tutorial explanations would be very much appreciated, I'm finding myself very lost in the sharepoint configuration...
