I am looking to purchase a new server with SBS 2003 Premium.

We are in the process of developing a new web application that allows our customers to log on to our web site to access information that would be included in the SQL database on the new server.  I am a little confused as to what kind of licensing is required in order to allow our 100 + customers to access and make revisions to data in the SQL database.

Do I have to have a CAL for each customer or is a per processor license required?  If the processor license is required and I am looking to put two processors in the server, do I have to get two processor licenses?

Thanks,
Bryan

If those users need to authenticate with your AD you can have max 75 users. If the users for that site register and those credentials are stores in the SQL database you can have as many as you wish. That is how this site works, it runs on SBS 2003. New in SBS 2003 is that you can use SQL for serving a website, this was not allowed in SBS 2000.

Thanks Mariëtte, but let me make sure I understand completely.

If users that are accessing the web site are authenticted through Active Directory (AD), I have to purchase a client access license (CAL) for each user up to 75 total?

If I authenticate using SQL, there is no limit to the number of users and there is no requirement for a CAL?

Thanks again,
Bryan

Yes. We had a long discussion about this with some other MVP's but this is how we understand the EULA. If you want to be 100% sure call Microsoft Licensing. I am running this site already for years on SBS 2003 and Bill Gates did not show up to tell me I am doing something wrong
