I have SBS2003 SP1 installed and have several instances of SQL installed w/ sp4 with no problems.  I have now added another instance and when I attempt to install the SP4 patch, I get the following error:

"The specified File cannot be opened as write.  Ensure the file is not in use and restart setup.  File: C;\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\shared\msxmlsql.dll"

I have uninstalled, tried reinstalling, etc to no avail.

Has anyone else experienced this or does anyone have a solution?

Thanks.
Robert

Hi Robert,

What kind of an instance is it? Anything in the eventlogs? Have you tried a reboot and then try again?

Hi Marina,

Thanks for responding.

It is just a seperate instance that I created to run diskeeper admin from.  Events logs do not show anything unique except that I keep getting a warning message that states the system is ignoring registry key ...mssqlserver/SNMP/current version because it is missing (which it is - I do not know much about SNMP).

Yes I have rebooted, etc to no avail.

I also have a bad problem with my Intel Server Manager program that came with the computer.  It seems that Intel failed to post that this version did not play kindly with SP1 for months after the release of SP1.  It will not uninstall and Intel refuses to provide manual uninstall instructions.  Essentially, this program is playing havoc with the windows performance counters and monitoring.

I can limp along until R2 comes out and then do a complete reinstall

My question is if I have very few users (5), can I do a fresh reinstall with the same names for users & computers for the AD and use the exchange backup that I have? The exchange is fine and really it is the only thing that I need (I can move the data to another machine)?

Thanks,
RObert

Hi Robert,

Can you tell us a bit more about that diskeeper admin needing SQL? Anything on their website about this issue maybe?
Which version of Intel Server Manager do you have and what have you tried to get the manual uninstall instructions? Seems to me that Intel should provide you those if they have them.
R2 won't be of much help, unless you have SA. Would you really want to do a reinstall because of the Intel issue?? It will mean recreating the user and computer accounts and rejoin them.

This error occurs after installing the seperate SQL instance and upon trying to apply the SP4 patch - ie, before installing the diskeeper. (Is there a limit to how many seperate SQL instances that you can have on SBS?  - I have 5)

The ISM version is 8.3.  I have searched the web site and spoken with their support and there is no manual unistall instructions that are available.

I just noticed that the R2 has been pushed back until 2nd qtr. :-(

I do not have a lot of applications loaded on the SBS server machine and I believe that with the SQL issue and the ISM issue, I would spend less time and have greater peace of mind doing a complete reinstall.

If I recreate the 5 user/computer accounts, is it possible to restore the exchange store for these users, amd if so, what is the process to do this?

Thanks again for your assistance.

Robert,

I just ran into the same problem upgrading an instance (6th one) for a new application.

To resolve the issue, I did the following:
  • Stopped all other SQL Server instanced services
  • Stopped the Microsoft Search service
  • Proceeded with upgrading the instance I needed to upgrade
  • Restarted Microsoft Search and the stopped SQL Server instances.

Hi Robert,

I don't know what the maximum SQL instances is. Everything that is valid for plain SQL 2000 standard server is valid for SQL on SBS.
ISM??
Again, R2 is only usefull if you have SBS with SA.
And for recreating (as in reinstalling I suppose?), check this out: How to backup and restore your SBS 2003 server

Marina,

Thanks for your reply.

Since I was able to get the SQL instance installed, I will move my backup questions to the appropriate forum.

Thanks again for your assistance,
Robert
