Small Business Server 2000

We have a SQL database and are receiving the same error message as the url below only the file size is 2048MB.  Has Microsoft reduced the database size on SBS?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;216812

Thanks
Graham

Graham,

Are you sure this is a full blown SQL database and not a MSDE? MSDE is limited to 2GB so that could well be the reason for what you see know.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Not being a SQL expert, how do I confirm that this is MSDE or a SQL database.  The error occurs when I use SQL Enterprise manager to increase the database.

Thanks
Graham

If you have in the Start menu a program group called SQL Server then you have SQL server installed. I will look into this issue later this evening. Was this an upgrade from SBS 4.5? Try to find an executable with name sqlservr.exe and right click on it and choose that tab 'version'. Post here what it is.

This is a fresh install of SBS2000.

sqlservr.exe version = 8.00.760

Thanks

I don't understand that because this appears to be SQL 7.0. Are you sure you used the correct media when you installed SQL? You should have SQL 2000.

To be honest, I am not sure.  I did not install this network, I inherited it from someone else.  I will investigate this and get back to you.
Thanks

Hi There,

A little bit more information for you.

Having spoken to the company responsible for the SQL application,  they have told me that SQL2000 is installed and so is SOPHOS and BackupExec and somehow things have got confused along the way.  SOPHOS and BackupExec use MSDE which is probably causing the 2GB limit message.
They recommend
1. backup the database.
2. remove SQL and the MSDE versions.
3. reinstall SQL 2000.
4. restore the database.

Does this sound like the problem?
What should I do about SOPHOS and BackupExec?  Looking at BackupExec, I dont think it is the SBS version

Thanks
Graham

I would not remove any instance. Just run SQL setup and choose to upgrade every instance, one by one, to full SQL. You propably need to boot after every instance you upgrade and do not forget to install the latest Service Pack 4 for SQL.

Hi Graham,

Sophos and BU will use their own MSDE databases, so I wouldn't upgrade those instances to full SQL without having this confirmed by Sophos and BU.
About BU, you should have the BU for SBS version, which should show up in the Information of BU.

I think it is now resolved!

I used the SQL2000 install procedure to create a new instance of SQL.  I then service packed that instance of SQL and used the copy/move wizard to move the database to the new instance.
All is working now and the users are able to use the application and the databse has grown to 2.7GB already. Backup Exec + SOPHOS are still running their MSDE versions.
I have learned quite a bit about SQL in the last 24 hours!

Thank you both for your help.

Kind Regards
Graham

Hi Graham,

Great! I started using SQL about 2 years ago and learned also a lot. This site is running from a SQL database, all pages and postings are stored in a SQL database
