I have just switched my SBS2000 over to an SBS2003 system and everything is working fine, except for connecting to my SQL databases using ODBC on the client computers. SQL is fully updated with SP4 and updates, Sharepoint Services is working fine. I have placed the databases in the SERVER/Sharepoint instance, and added the TCP/IP and Named Pipes in the network section of the SQL instance. I have added security groups for each database and added the users and then added it to the SQL security. Then when I run the ODBC, I just get errors when trying to connect to the SERVER/SHAREPOINT - see attached SQL Error. Never had a problem with SQL 2000 on SBS2000 systems. Can any one please help, as I need to get these back up and running quickly.

Thanks.

Just had a thought - have I got the wrong end of the stick over this - should I be installing another instance of SQL so that I can connect with (local) ?

Problem now fixed.

You can not place user SQL databases in the sharepoint SERVER\Sharepoint instance according to Microsoft, you must install a default instance of SQL Server 2000 then Patch it with the latest Service Pack.

Then install the database into the default SQL instance.

Where did you read that? Can you give me an URL to a document?

Hi Mariëtte, I could not find a solution to this problem, as I needed to get these SQL databases up quickly I called Microsoft Critical Support and was put through to the SQL Server Team, after a chat, they told me that additional SQL databases should not be placed in the Sharepoint instance and that a new SQL instance should be installed on the Server.

If you want the tech guys name + number, please email me: mre@pidesign.co.uk

Cheers

I think that this may be the same problem that I am having. Does SBS2003, by default, not connect to the SHAREPOINT instance remotly?  I migrated our old sharepoint from msde to sql...  Is there a setting I can change to allow access from client desktops on our network?

Thanks

Hi John,

Better start a new thread and give as much details as you can get.
