Hi All,

When I upgraded MSDE to SQL Server, you get the instance name of SHAREPOINT.

Thinking this is not what I want, has anyone installed SQL Server after the installation of the operating system and before the installing the rest of SBS2003 ?

My thought on this is that it gives you the opportunity to install and patch SQL Server and secure it before anything uses it.

Any ideas on this ??? anyone installed SBS this way ?

Thanks
Dan

What is the problem? Renaming the Sharepoint instance is not a good idea. You will run into trouble when installing future service packs for SBS.

There's no problem.

It was just a question as to whether it can be done and the ramifications of it.

It's just that I want to use Sophos and WSUS on my server as well and each of these use SQL Server and need to install to an instance. I didn't really want to create new instances for everything.

I should not mess with the Sharepoint instance. The fact that it is named 'Sharepoint' is important. I renamed the instance on my server and when installing SP1 it went wrong. Having multiple instances is not such a problem.

Can you not run the SQL installation routine a second time to get a second SQL instance tothe Sharepoint one?  This time following the "new Instance" options described in the completing setup instructions from the SBS Premium disk.  In this case you accept the new instance install rather than the upgrade.  You can call it what you like.

Not sure though what overhead a second SQL installation places on your Server hardware?

You can create as many instances as you want as long as you do not rename the Sharepoint instance and follow the documentation on the Premium disks for upgrading to full SQL. Compared to what SQL can handle most databases I see in a SBS environments are miniature databases.
