We are in the midst of trying to figure two problems.  We have SBS 2003 Std. and want to install 2000 SQL Ent. on it.  We ran into the error that this OS does not support this program.  So we want to know if we upgrade SBS to the premium edition if that the SQL std. that is supplied can be upgraded to SQL ent. or if it will even support 2000 SQL ent.

If SBS 2003 will not support 2000 SQL Ent., then I assume our best bet is to upgrade to 2003 server?

Any help in trying to decipher what versions of SQL will be supported on which versions of SBS would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jim,

This page http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/techinfo/overview/generalfaq.mspx tells you that indeed SQL Enterprise is not supported on SBS 2003.
I wouldn't say that from SBS 2003 you upgrade to 2003 server, as you are loosing all the other features of SBS. However, you can use the Transition pack to get this done. On the same page is more information about that.

Thanks for the help but I do have one other question.  Is it going to be possible to install SQL 2005 Workgroup on 2003 SBS std. SP1 or would we have to upgrade tothe R2 release when it comes out and then install Workgroup then.  I understand that SQL 2000 standard is similar to the new Work Group edition so I am curious if it is backwards compatible in a sense.

Thanks a ton for your help in straightening out these confusing integrations.

Hi Jim,

If you have bought SBS with SA, you are entitled to get the R2 upgrade which indeed will have the SQL 2005 edition. Without SA, you will have to buy a new license. I wouldn't install SQL 2005 on SBS now, as that is not supported yet.
