Hi,

Please would someone be able to clarify this.  I have SBS 2003 standard edition and was looking to seperately purchase SQL Server 2005 standard edition and run this on the SBS box.  There seems to be a bit of confusion as to whether it will properly run or not.

Its been suggested that probably not but if you review the operating system requirements on the Microsoft site, it lists both the Standard & Enterprise editions as being able to run on SBS 2003 sp1.  I do have the trial standard edition of SQL 2005 running at the moment and it seems fairly stable but i'm just a bit concerned in the long run it might do something horrible to SBS.

Man thanks

Rob

Hi Rob,

In theory SQL 2005 will run on SBS 2003, as long as you don't do anything with the existing MSDE instances. If you have SA, you are entitled to the R2 upgrade and you can upgrade to Premium at the same time which will get you SQL 2005 and ISA 2004 for the same price. When buying SQL 2005 separate, you will also need to buy SQL CAL's.

Marina Roos Smallbizserver.Net AdministratorMission accomplished. We have joined the branch office to our SBS 2003 Headquarters and have the same user experience on the branch office as we have on our local  network at the Headquarters. Want to know how? Hi Marina,

I initally just bought the server really for educational purposes, so sadly didn't take out software assurance, but now i'm having ideas of things to do with it.  I may still still look at upgrading to the premium edition but i really wanted to use the integration, notification services and business analytics as i wanted to create a metric dashboard linked into WSS sites. I think the premium edition comes with SQL Server workgroup which sadly dosen't seem to include these features.

I guess if it makes financial sense to the project and there's a cost benefit then i will take the plunge of the SQL CAL's

Thanks for you reply

Rob
