This is driving me mad.  I Added my log in under the "login" section of the SQL enterprise manager snap-in (i added both me and a new security group containing myself - neither work) and when I try to conenct to to the server in Excel I get "[dbnetlib][connectionopen (connect()).]sql server does not exist of access denied"  I am using both DOMAIN and I tried DOMAIN\SHAREPOINT because that is the only DB I have. From reading posts in this forum I came to the conclusion that you shouldn't install another instance of SQL server, just work off of the sharepoint one already installed. I searched both the forum (no information) and google for this error and I just got a bunch of information pertaining to ASP users trying to connect to SQL through scripts...

I am using the "Data => Import External Data => Import Data => +New SQL Server Connection" method in Excel when I am trying to connect. What could be the problem? My IPconfig on this client is good (server ip as gateway) and I know that I did the security set-up correctly because it was right out of the pages of Advanced Windows Small Business Server 2003 - Best Practices.  I added Excel to my list of allowed programs in Windows Firewall & tried disabling Trend Micro CSM for SMB even though the firewall portion of that program isn't active - no luck.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Did you create the new database and added your windows account to that database as dbowner?

Yes I created a new database and my account is under the security login as dbowner (I even added the "domain users" and "domain computers" group when I couldn't connect and still nothing).
