I am trying to reinstall SBS Monitoring (using Add/Remove Programs - Windows Small Business Server 2003) and the process stops with the error: "SQL Server 2000 needs SP3 for Windows Server compatibility". I have applied SP4 to our SQL Server 2000 instance with no apparent errors. The registry value for this instance seems to be correct (8.00.2039). A prior posting on this site (/Forum/tabid/53/forumid/14/postid/4013/view/topic/Default.aspx) seems to be speaking of much the same issue but there is no answer. Any further ideas on how to get past this error? I have installed Reporting Services on our server and also have Backup Exec 10.0 (with its MSDE instance) running on the server. Could either of these be the cause of the error?

Thanks for any assistance on this.

You should able to continue when you see that error 'SQL Server 2000 needs SP3 for Windows Server compatibility'. This is described in the Premiuminstall doc on your Premium CD.

Thanks for the quick reply. I've gone through the premium CD and do not come across any specific info on continuing past this error message. What am I overlooking?

Strange. I think we are not on the same frequency. The premium install doc says:
  1. When the SQL Server 2000 SP2 and below message appears, click Continue. The issue is resolved after you install SQL Server 2000 SP4 later in this document.

I guess this is not the same warning as you get?

There is no option for me to continue. I'm not sure if we are talking about quite the same thing. We have had SBS 2003 running for over a year and a number of weeks ago the SBS Monitoring feature ceased working (along with NT Backup -- now resolved by reregistering a dll) following an attempt to uninstall/reinstall companyweb. When I search for an active MSDE instance of SBS Monitoring nothing shows up (though the database files are in the SQL Server folder). To get SBS Monitoring going again I am trying to reinstall only that feature using the Add/Remove Programs - Windows Small Business Server 2003 choice. The wizard pops up saying "setup is loading installation requirements" and then moves on to "setup is checking the setup requirements." Here is where it stops and gives the error "SQL Server 2000 needs SP3 for Windows Server compatibility". It has a red x (blocking symbol) and does not allow me to continue until the issue is resolved.

Am I misunderstanding how to reinstall SBS Monitoring? Does SP1 change/affect how to do this?

Hi Peter,

Can you try to reapply SBS 2003 SP1 and then run the setup to reinstall the Monitoring?
