Below is the extract from the 'Completing Setup for Microsoft Windows Small Business Server Premium Technologies' help document Version 2:

'You can install SQL Server 2000 as your database for a business application. Additionally, you can upgrade the instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (Windows) (WMSDE) used by Windows SharePoint® Services if you want to be able to search document libraries in your company's internal Web site.'

I have just installed the SQL2000 with SP4 - only as an upgrade to the internal companyweb site following: 'To upgrade the instance of MSDE used for Windows SharePoint Services'

The companyweb functions well - and I noticed the new search feature in the top right hand corner..

I also notice that the SQL Server Service Manager in systray - is not running and is blank in both Server and Services..

Is it correct that SQL SSM is supposed to be related to a seperate instance of the SQL2000 (which I did not install) - and that the upgrade I just did for the internal site has nothing to do with this SQL SSM in the systray..?

Should I first have installed a new instance following the 'To install a new instance of SQL Server 2000' in the document..?

Hi,

This behavior is normal if you have multiple instances on SQL...

Open the Server Service Manager in the systray and use this namimg convention to find your instance(s): servernam\instancename

i.e. myserver\sharepoint or myserver\sbsmonitoring ...

ahh - I see..

But when I entered as you wrote - it said that an instance of that one is already running..

Also - what I would like to have clarified is - is this Server Service Manager necessary for the companyweb sharepoint database to run..?
I mean - what is the actual purpose of the SSM..?
Because apparently the companyweb runs fine with the SSM not running and blanked out..

SSM is not necessary for sharepoint instance neither for any other instances to run...
It's just a tool to help you manage the SQL services from the systray...
