Hi , every day, at the same time, the administrator still receives the following email:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"A large amount of memory is committed to applications and processes. Consistently high memory usage can cause performance problems.

To determine which processes and applications are using the most memory, use Task Manager. Monitor the activity of these resources over a few days. If they continue to use a high level of memory and are less critical processes or services, try stopping and then restarting them.

You can disable this alert or change its threshold by using the Change Alert Notifications task in the Server Management Monitoring and Reporting taskpad."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the task manager shows me that sqlservr.exe memory usage more than 600.000 KB and furthermore in the task manager exists more than one I try present sqlservr.exe process, is it normal?

I followed the Mariëtte advices (Forums > Smallbusiness Server 2003 > Server issues

> Subject: A large amount of memory...help me!)

I installed on my server:

  1. Exchange Service Pack 1 and the patches 843539 and I configure the boot.ini:
    1. Add the /3GB switch to the Boot.ini file on the server.
    2. Set the /USERVA=3030 parameter in the Boot.ini file.
    3. Configure the HeapDeCommitFreeBlockThreshold registry value in the following registry key
  2. Isa Service Pack 2 and I configure the setting for caching memory from 50% to 10% (http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=132)

The only installation I did not execute is that of the SQL SP4.

What do you advise me to do?

I read the article http://support.microsoft.com/?id=321363 but I did not understand what to do well…

The installation of SQL Service Pack 4 would the problem solve me?

TIA

Simona

Do you have a big SQL database running? In task manager you can add the Pid to the view. Take a look there and find the Pid of the process that is consuming a lot of Ram. Because you more then one SQL instance on your server we need to know which one takes a lot of Ram before we can do something about it.

Hi Mariëtte,

from the Task Manager of the server showing is not possible the PID of the process that is consuming a lot of Ram.

If from Command prompt I run the order “qprocess *” I am able to see the PID of the processes but not the memory usage by every single process.

Therefore summing up if I open the Task Manager I do not see the PID but I see this alone:

Image name

Mem Usage

Sqlservr.exe

66.140 KB

Sqlservr.exe

74.576 KB

Sqlservr.exe

69.000 KB

Sqlservr.exe

1.045.084 KB

If from Command prompt I run the order “qprocess *” I see this alone:

1424

System

Sqlservr.exe

1436

Sqlservr.exe

How can I verify the PID of the process that is consuming a lot of Ram?

Did I help?

TIA

Simona

Type from the command prompt tasklist /svc and you will get a list with pids and services.

The question is what this instance is doing? You must have installed this for a special purpose, what does it serve?

Not sure this is relevant to your issue and I'm two months late in the response but I noticed that you had the /3GB switch and /userva=3030 set in the boot.ini. According to the following article this is a no no on SBS 2003.   Can someone clarify please? Use of the /3GB switch in Exchange Server 2003 on a Windows Server 2003-based system.

Hi Jason,

The jury is not clear on that. Mariette and me use that switch on all servers that have 2 Gb or more.

Thanks.

I wanted to set the switches on my server but decided not to because of that article.   It's good to hear that other people are setting it without issue. Are you using the /3GB and the /USERVA=3030 or just the /3GB switch?
