I am currently running SBS 2003 Stanard. I need to get my server ready for Microsoft CRM 3.0. However, this requires a default instance of SQL server. I read in this forum and other that the only difference between sbs standard and premium is the premium disk. So i used this disk to install SQL.

This is where my problem starts... I have installed SQL 2000 Standard and also upgraded my sharepoint instance from MSDE to SQL Server. Somehow my default instance of SQL got screwed up or never installed correctly. I assume this because I do not see a service running for this default instance. I have tried unisntalling SQL and reinstalling it to no avail. Now, whenever I try to reinstall SQL, it will not even let me install a default instance. The checkbox for the default instance is greyed out in the setup.

To make matters worse, I can't upgrade the default instance (if it exists) or my sharepoint instance to SP4. When i try to upgrade the default instance to SP4 the setup gives me an error saying it can't find the service MSSQL. When i try to upgrade the sharepoint intance of sql to sp4, the setup just disappears and terminates without finishing.

This puts me in a pickle, because now I can't upgrade to Premium using the premium SBS discs that I have. I can't get my default instnace of SQL to work, thus I can't install the CRM.

Has anyone out there made the same mistakes I have?
Is there any way out of this? CAn anyone help me? Is there a way to migrate to SBS Premium?
Is there a way to get SQL working? Is it even possible to get a default instance of SQL working on sbs 2003 standard??? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi Julius,

Did you post in the public newsgroups as well about this? And did you try to install the Premium from your Action Pack in stead of buying the proper upgrade from SBS Standard to Premium?

Yes, I have posted in the public news group for SQL Server Setup issues. It has been posted for about 4 business days, and no response yet. I have also contacted microsoft small business + support. And they have been no assitance.

Yes, I am installing from the preium technology disk that came with SBS 2003 premium in the action pack. I can not do a simple upgrade because the installation checks for SQL and verifies that all instances are patched with SP4. And, as described, i can't even apply SP4.... Any other ideas?

There are no errors in the event log.

Julius,

I have never seen the Action Pack shipped with SBS 2003 Premium. It is always the Standard Edition and some loose CD's with ISA 2004 on it but you cannot use those with SBS 2003. Are you really 100% sure that you have a CD called Premium Technology?

OK, then it must be different per country I assume. I have no idea how to fix Julius problem without more information though.

Once you screw up the SQL install or it gets hanged, it is a registry hack to get it to reinstall. I can't remember where it is, but Microsoft did it for me.
