The Company I work for recently bought a new HP Server and I begun installing SBS 2003 Premium, SQL 2000 included. Unfortunately, when I afterwords tried to install Systems Insight Manager (SIM), a system management software provided by HP with the server, I got a negative result. It seemed that the installation software were not to be able to populate the database that it added to SQL 2000 even if I'm quite sure that I gave it proper credentials.
So I uninstalled SQL 2000 thinking that it was the problem; HP states that SIM can also be installed on a MSDE instance, so that the CD provides one for those systems, like Windows Server 2003, that do not have one. But, even if the installation program of SIM recognized the MSDE instance of Sharepoint, things went the same.
Then I installed the MSDE instance provided with the CD of SIM and only at this point the software installed completely.
Now I'm worrying about how to integrare the new MSDE instance with a full installation of SQL 2000. I've read Mariette Knap's answer in the "Multiple instances of sqlserver.exe running" topic and that such an operation is not advisable.
I would like to know if you have any experience with Systems Insight Manager installation and if you can describe why combining multiple instance of SQL Server should be not advisable.
Thank you a lot for your time, best regards,
Riccardo

Hi Riccardo,

SIM installation does work with SQL2000 which comes with SBS Premium.
The SIM setup ask you to provide a servername\instance name, i.e. sbsserver\sharepoint
Then you have to supply an account that is part of 2 sql server roles; security administrators and database creators, most of the time, use the administrator account...

And this is it, the installation will create 1 to 4 or 5 DB's depending of the components you selected.

Rgds,
Didier

Hi Didier, many thanks for your answer.
The way you explained the procedure makes it look so simple that you gave me the incentive to uninstall the installation that I've done with the MSDE instance, to install again SQL 2000 with all the service packs, and then to try once more the installation of SIM.
Thank you again, best regards,
Riccardo

Hello everyone.
Well after many attempts, I've finally been able to correctly install all the applications found in the HP Management CD provided with our ProLiant server, thanks once more to Didier's support.
The most interesting thing was that ProLiant Essentials Performance Management Pack seems to refuse to install if the SQL data directory is on a disk different from C: or, at least, on a disk that is different from the one where SQL or the application's binaries are.
On the contrary, HP Systems Insight Manager, which also relies on SQL server, accept to create its database in a directory placed on a different disk.

Then my new question: is there any simple way to move the whole SQL data files from a disk to another one, on the same server? Should I follow the instructions as detailed in "How to create a new SQL instance and move databases" Mariette's article or there is something simplier? Consider that I can stop SQL for all the time needed because our server hasn't been put in production yet.

Thank you for your time, kind regards,
Riccardo

Hello.
An answer isn't any more needed. I did it following MS KB article 224071.
Not very simple but done.
