Hello all..
Error msg "sql server 2000 needs SP3 for windows server 2003 compatibility" when upgrading from SBS2000 with SQL2000SP4 to SBS2003. It loox like that sbs setup expects some version of sql and if is it higher than expected, it stops..
Is there any solution other than manually rewrite registry entry about SQL version? Because to me that does not seem to be very system and reliable way.. TIA Jiri |

| This looks like a bug to me. I have informed SBS dev in Redmond about this and I will inform you later about the steps to make this work. |

As on my research result, during the upgrading process, the SBS server is looking for the Version: 8.00.760 or higher within the registry for SQL. If you have SQL SP4 installed, the version should be 8.00.2039. Currently, I would suggest you check the version of the SQL via the following registry key. Under HKLM\software\microsoft\mssqlserver\mssqlserver\currentversion
The key value: CSDversion Data type: REG_SZ Value Data: 8.00.761 If the value is not correct, you may need to rerun the SQL service pack installation package and confirm the SP4 is installed correctly. |

If you read the install DOcumentation for SQL Server 2000 [on the supplied SBS 2003 Premium Edition CD] it does infact tell you about this. If you have got SQL server seperately then you need to get SP3 seperatly. In the Doc Microsoft supply SQL Server 2000 and tell you to ignore this error when you install it. However also included on the SBS 2003 Premium Edition disk is .... (wait for it) SQL Server 2000 SP3.... which they advise you install straight away, before trying to use anything.
Yes its a bit of a cheap way to do it I suppose but it works. |

Hi Folks I have a similar problem in that I get the Error msg "sql server 2000 needs SP3 for windows server 2003 compatibility" when upgrading from SBS2000 with SQL2000SP4 to SBS2003. The problem is I have managed to upgrade the default instance of sql server 2000 but I can not apply sp4 to other instances (sbsmonitoring and bkupexec) as I get the error "not a sql server 200 instance", although they are offered in the drop down box as candidates for upgrade.
I have checked the registry key as advised and this shows under mssqlserver/mssqlserver/currentversion as 8.00.2039
Howeverwhen I look at the other instances, for exapmle under Microsoft SQL Server/sbsmonitoring/mssqlserver/currentversion I see 8.00.761 From previous posts it looks like 8.00.761 should be recognised when I run SBS setup. My only guess is that maybe there are the remnants of an older version of mssqlserver present, but even if that is true I have no Idea how to unscramble this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks
Bill |

Hi
I made an error on the last post (copied and pasted too much!). I have SBS 2003 and am trying to reinstall Sharepoint after a problem. When I run SBS Setup I get the sql 2000 sp3 error and can not continue, even though sp3 is installed. As mentioned I can not install sql 2000 sp4 either. Sorry for the slightly misleading post.
Many thanks
Bill |

Hi Bill,
Monitoring and Backupexec are MSDE instances, no SQL server instances, so you can't use the SQL SP4 to upgrade those. |

That is a bug in the SBS Setup. If you go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\MSSQLServer\CurrentVersion\ and change the CSDVersion to 8.00.760 from 8.00.2039 (assuming you have SQL 2000 SP4), and run the SBS setup it will not complain about the SP3 requirement.
It seems like the check is an "equal" (=) instead of greater than (>).
That is the only SQL instance you need to change, leave Monitoring MSDE and SharePoint alone.
After the check is complete change the version back to 8.00.2039 and you are good to go!
Sammy
