Hi Everybody,

I have an SBS2003 Premium box running ISA 2004 and SQL 2000.

Due to the heavy usage of SQL I am considering implementing a W2k3 Member Server and installing SQL 2000 on this.

Will I need CAL's for the clients to access this new SQL server or will my SBS CAL's cover it ?

Thanks in advance

Phil

Hi Phil,

You will have to buy a separate W2k3 server license and a SQL server license. The SBS CAL's will only cover that other server for SQL if you have SBS 2003 R2.

Thanks

Hi Phil,

Yes, but there might be a gotcha in the SQL server license. Of course it will be SQL 2005, but I think there is a difference in licensing as in per processor or per user: Licensing: Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2: Frequently Asked Questions: http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsServer2003/sbs/evaluation/faq/licensing.mspx

Plus the fact that your application might NOT be supported on SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition - yet ;-)

Thanks Marina, that makes a bit more sense now.

Edwin, the application definately supports SQL Workgroup 2005, the developers practically encourage us to use it! I also have it set up in a test environment and it works perfectly.
