I have a new sbs 2003 r2 server and I have installed a company specific app that uses sql 2000 sp3. I am unable to connect using a workstation unless I give the user admin rights. If I try to connectwithout admin rights the app just shows that splash screen and disappears.

I am not sure what the problem is, and I am pretty sure the incorrect solution is to give all users admin rights.

Thanks in advance.

You should be able to allow for a group to have access to the database and assign the users to the group. But yes, admin rights are not suggested unless its just for that one particular database and the app requires it. (Too many applications still require admin access for some reason)

How do I do this? The application requires a sql login. Let's call the login "aaa", and this login already exists in the sql database. Do I create a group in windows called 'aaaGroup' and give it admin rights and then add users to the group?

If possible please be detailed on where in windows sbs I need to go in order to add these items. The extent of my knowledge of permissions and groups is small as I usually add and remove rights until things work the way I want. In this case it is production machine so I can't revert to my old ways.

Also if you have a link where I can read and learn more it would also be appreciated.

The question here is this - does your application really require SQL admin account to log in to SQL Server? If yes, then just give the login "aaa" sysadmin privileges. In SQL Server Enterprise Manager, expand Console Root > Microsoft SQL Servers > SQL Server Group > (local)Windows NT > Security > Logins. You can create a new login (for a new account) by right-clicking on the Logins window and select New Login. For the "aaa" login, right-click on the login and select Properties. Go to the Server Roles tab and check the System Administrators check box - you're gonna regret doing this ;-)

Hi King,

You need to apply SP4 for that SQL instance as the SP3 isn't supported anymore.
