I am in the process of installing Blackberry Enterprise Server. I want to use MSDE for the BES database. When the portion of the install relating to the database starts the install fails because a database cannot be found. BES docs explain that an instance should be created automatically. So I tried to create an instance of MSDE manually figuring I could point the install to it. Well the install of the new instance fails every time. I am running 2003 SBS standard. I have been successful creating instances on other servers/workstations; however I have struggled on this server with no avail. Any insight as to what is causing the problem would be much appreciated.

Can you post your errors? Search for the SQLInst.LOG file

The Install log is over 2MB so I am unable to post it. Is there a particular portion I can isolate and send. The install may have output the verbose version. I will see if I can get a shorter version of the log as well.

Thanks,

Eric

It looks like your registry is corrupted. Can you post the command you used to install MSDE? Have you done a reboot after the failed installation?

The command I used to install MSDE from the command line:

C:\dir\MSDE>setup INSTANCENAME="BESMgmt" SAPWD="StrongPwd" /L C:\MSDELog.log

I have not restarted the server since the failed install.

I just wanted to update this post for anyone who may have this problem in the future, and judging from the number of posts I have found someone will. When running SBS 2003 server you must have Microsoft .Net framework version 2.0 and 3.0 installed in order to create a new instance of MSDE. As soon as I updated the framework I was able to create the instance. Hope this helps.

.NET Framework is not needed at all to install MSDE. MSDE uses the same engine as SQL Server 2000 which can be installed even on a Windows NT 4.0 platform. Only SQL Server 2005 requires .NET Framework v2.0. There must be something else that is causing MSDE not to be installed on your platform which requires .NET Framework.

I found a KB article on the Blackberry site. At the very bottom the Additional Information section explains the need for .Net framework 2.0 and 3.0 when installing an instance of MSDE. That article number is KB11232, and it can be found at Blackberry.com. I will post the link below. In regards to your post I don't know what to say. I was unable to manually install an instance of MSDE 2000 SP4. Once I installed the framework I was able to manually create an MSDE Instance. This article specifically notes that it applies to the SBS platform. Apparently this was the solution to the problem.

Looking at the documentation for BlackBerry, it does require the .NET Framework, specifically version 1.1 with SP1 which is probably the reason why MSDE cannot be installed with out versions 2.0 and 3.0 but it doesn't make sense to me at all
