I have a custom app that uses MSDE that I need to install on SBS 2003 Std.  I'd prefer to use the default instance.  I'm assuming I need to go through the regular MSDE SP3 installer. Are there any gotchas to look out for?  Any special instructions since MSDE is so integrated w/ SBS?

Thanks,

Kelly

Hi Kelly,

What kind of an app is this? Normally they install the MSDE themselves. You don't want to mess with the existing Monitoring and Sharepoint MSDE's. There is no default instance with SBS standard.

I'm a software developer and I'm installing MSDE as part of a custom app.  I understand that there's no default instance - that's why I'm asking.  I want to make sure if I install a default instance that it won't interfere with the Monitoring and Sharepoint instances.

Kelly the only way you'd screw those up if, when you install SQL you attemp to upgrade them to SQL, as sated in the getting started guide.

You install a default instance with SQL Server

MSDE has to be a named instance.

As long as the MSDE instance had a unique name for your application (i.e. you don't use SBSMONITORING, SHAREPOINT, BACKUPEXEC, SOPHOS or anything like that) you can't go wrong.  As a developer myself, I prefer to give users in certain circumstances the option of creating the database in MSSQL rather than always installing another MSDE instance.  MSDE installs aren't always as reliable as they could be.
