Hi all,

We have a client that has presented us with an SQL query that I cannot answer...assistance gratefully received!
SQL Server saves each database as .MDF and Log files at a user-defined location. This however seems to be limited to local computer drives rather than to locations across the network”
By this I mean local drives ‘relative to the Server’ ie drives on the Server machine itself.
I can get data to store successfully on local drives on the server. The issue seems to be our other networked data drives.
Example:-
I remote Desktop to our Server. Open SQL Server Management Studio. Attach Database ( from existing mdf / log file) . A File Dialog now appears and the only options are C/D/E Drive locations.
Our networked drives are not shown. I am slightly incredulous that SQL Server cannot navigate to data files across the network  - I can import MS Access Databases successfully from the network but I can’t store the mdfs on the network.
Maybe there’s a logical reason for this.
Thanks a million in advance of your help!

Mike.

If I am not mistaken, remote files are not supported in SQL Server but nobody is stopping you from using the sp_attach_db stored procedure to attach database files from a remote location using a UNC
