Hi,

Hopefully someone can help me out with an issue I have...

Had to restore a server from Backup and the MSDE databases don't appear to have come back correctly.

The folders are present under the program files\sql server\... directory but when I try to start the related services for each they fail.

I have managed to get SBS monitoring working again by using the SBS setup and re-installed it. That service now starts correctly and is producing the monitoring reports. Which suggests that the underlying MSDE is working.

Can anyone tell me the easiest way to bring back on line the db's for SOPHOS, SHAREPOINT and WSUS?

Thanks.

Hi Glym,

I am wondering about how you did the backup and restore, because with a full backup all should have been restored without a problem. Can you explain exactly what you did?

Hi Marina,

Sure. The restore was not very clean. The site is using Arcserve and I did the following steps :-
  1. Installed base SBS (CD1).
  2. Installed Arcserve
  3. Restored all sessions in full to C drive.
  4. Rebooted. The server failed just after the boot menu with incorrect hal or dll missing. Not the exact error message but something similar. Every attempt to reboot the server failed. I could press F8 and tried each of the options but nothing worked.
  5. In the end I booted from CD1 and took the repair option.
  6. This has given me a working system but is not 100% correct. I was running out of time so had to hand it back over to the client so they could continue to operate.
  7. The SBS monitoring is now working but the other MSDE databases aren't.
Any help appreciated.

Regards,

Glyn Emmett

Hi Glyn,

Seems to me that you didn't have a system state backed up. If you would have used SBS backup, you wouldn't have this problem. Without knowing what errors exactly you have, it will be hard to give you instructions on how to continue, but I think a new install of Sophos, Intranet and WSUS will be necessary.
