Hi,

I have a PowerBuilder Application running on an XP Professional workstation accessing SQL Server 2000 running on a Small Business Server 2003.  The applications runs for sometime and then I receive the following error "Select error: SQLSTATE = 01000 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets] ConnectionRead (recv())."
I am using ODBC to interface with the Sql Server.  The problem occurs if I use the Powerbuilder application or Access (the files are linked to Access).

I have updated to SP4 on Sql 2000 but that has not helped.  Any Suggestions?

Thanks
Rich

It could well be that XP Firewall needs to be configured for this. If you turn off the Firewall in the services applet on the client does it work then? This is just a way to find out what is causing the problem. If it works we need to change the Firewall GPO on the server. Do you get too many TCP/IP connections errors in the XP event log?

Hi Mariette,

Thank you for the reply - I have turned off the XP Firewall - I am behind a hardware firewall so I tend to run all computers w/o XP's firewall.  The same problem occurs on other XP desktops.  The interesting thing is the application is not new and the problem started about 3 weeks ago.  It happens intermittently in that the program will run for 20 minutes or so (time varies) and then I get the error.

Thanks

Rich

Hi Richard,

As you can read in another thread, you shouldn't disable the XP firewall at all, not even if you think you are 'safe' behind a hardware firewall. Are there any other errors in the eventlogs of the XP and the server?

Hi Marina,

How have you been?  Ok - I have turned on the firewall.  There are errors in "Application" identifying the PowerBuilder program as "Application Hang".  The detail says "Hanging application pb60.exe version 6.5.0.444 hang module hungapp version 0.0.0. hang address 0x0000000".  There are no errors in any other event within 25 minutes of the hanging and those errors are related to W32Time.
Thanks
Rich

Hi-
I think the problem may have to do with the SBS2003.  I say this because I have two machines that I am working with. Right after I got the application error, I noticed a bubble message on the second computer sayiing communications with the server was lost. When the message saying communications was re-established on machine 2, I was able to re-connect on machine 1 with  the application. My guess is somehow I am losing communications with the server and that is what is generating the error.

Can you suggest which logs to check?  I did check the server and didn't see anything obvious.

Thanks
Rich

Hi Rich,

I'm fine, thank you ;-) Make sure the server is time syncing properly with an external time server and the clients are syncing with the server:
net time /setsntp:servername
w32tm /resync
That way we can rule out the time errors for loosing connection. Also, have you contacted the vendor of this program?

Hi,

I developed the program :-(.  I think you are right about the sync.  I will try the code over the next few days and see whats happening.

As always - thanks for the help.
