Hi there,....

on our previous SBS2000, we used to send mail through SQL server agent on the completion of scheduled DTS tasks to let administrators know of the outcomes.  This works great, however on our previous SBS2000, it originally had outlook installed on the server to create the MAPI profile for SQL Aerver Agent to use.  The database admin who set up the DTS's in SQL had not worked on an SBS before, and therefore had not setup a system on an SQL server that also had the Exchange Server on the same box, meaning that the install of outlook would not have been a problem, but of course Microsoft do NOT advise installing Outlook on an Exchange Server. SO,.. with that ruled out, we need to simply create a MAPI profile on our SBS2003 for SQL Server Agent to use to send mail.  I have read all the documents on how to do this, but they all only show how to do it using advance VB scripting, or xml scripts.  I am no programmer!!  I have NO KNOWLEDGE of scripting things like this,...  SURELY someone has a nice simple GUI tool to create a mail profile on an SBS????  Surely I am not the first to encounter this need!!!
M&M,... please help!!!

Mariëtte Knap Smallbizserver.Net AdministratorMission accomplished. We have joined the branch office to our SBS 2003 Headquarters and have the same user experience on the branch office as we have on our local  network at the Headquarters. Want to know how? Well... I am totally lost now.

After pouring over those documents again....   I tried for hours to create a profile using NEWPROF.
I finally got it to work.... and it said New Profile created.

I couldn't find it in the SQL Agent,.. so I manually typed it in... tested it and it said sucesfully started and stopped a mail session!  YAY!... .  NOT!!!

So,.. more reading.... downloaded PROFMAN2...  started that up.   It found the profile I created....  cool....   looked at it,...  removed the Exchange Server service.... reattached it...  that's looks better,...  it brought up the wizard like outlook does, and I was able to test the name on the exchange server.  Cool...  done....  saved,..closed.
Hmmm.... SQL Server Agent still can't find it.  Typed it in again.... tested it.... says success....   restarted the agent.... hmmm.. profile has disappered.  Error log says unable to start a mail session,  please ensure a cient is installed....   BUT I CAN't INSTALL A CLIENT ON THE EXCHANGE SERVER....  doesn't this thing know that it's a small business server?!?!?!?!

Why couldn't Microsoft make an easy way of doing this?!?!?!?!  THis is taking me HOURS,.. and I am getting NO-WHERE!!!

stupid.

So,... I am thinking that I am totally missing something,... or I need to manually restart some service to hook the profile into some registration so the SQL Server can pick it up in the drop down list.

Am I right???   Or way off??

I would have honestly thought this was something Microsoft would have worked out for SBS....  it's obviously a cumbersome process, and involves more knowledge that the average person dealing with SBS,.. I would think.

A nice GUI wizard would be lovely!!!!

Just use Profman2 to create the account.

Make sure both the services, SQLSERVERAGENT and MSSQLSERVER, are running under the same user account and that account cannot be the localsystem account. ie must be something like domain\administrator

If the account then shows up in the drop down list try running the following in the Query Analyzer just to make sure.

xp_sendmail @recipients=administrator,@subject='SQLMAILTEST'

When I created the agent and ran the test button on the agent menu it says it fails but when I use that same created agent to send a status report the email does work.
