Hello,

I recently installed an SBS 2003 server at a new client site.  I guess all the drinking from my youth decided to come back to haunt me because I accidentally misspelt the domain name for the client (which is the name of their company).  They, of course, want this fixed.  From what I can tell, there is no easy way of changing the domain on the SBS server without a complete reinstall, which is something I want to avoid.  I've never done a Swing migration before but would be happy to pony up some money for it if it can help me do this easily.  Can someone advise if a domain name change can be done easily via swing?  If so, can you provide a basic outline of how it works so that I ensure I have everything I need (ie.  will I need a second server for anything?  How much on site/downtime will be involved, etc.)

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi,

i've the same problem. I suppose that the right way is to uninstall Certificate Authority, then try to rename the server.
After that you can rename domain and server name.

I've tryed this operation on a Windows 2003 Standard and it works

Next step after verifying that DNS works fine and to remove the previous zone.
At the end you need to reinstall Certification Authority and reassign the correct SSL Certificate to Default Web Sites.

I'm going to do this operation on a virtual machine to try...

I hope that this few steps can help you.

Sincerely

Mikhail,
The 'swing' process is specifically designed to avoid domain name changes. I believe Jeff has been asked this before, ventured down the path, and is more likely to discourage you from using the 'swing' method. You can check with Jeff though, contact info available on site. I am sure Jeff can handle the issue but he will use another method, maybe some swing tools.

Massimo,
What works for standard server doesn't always work for SBS.
