I try to configure Two Nics, a static IP address, 1 router from the articles but clients can't connect to Internet.

Router
WAN IP: ISP assigned
Submask: ISP assigned
Gateway : ISP assigned
Static DNS 1 : ISP assigned
Static DNS 2 : ISP assigned
Router Name : router1
Local IP Address : 192.168.16.1
DHCP Server : Disable
Starting IP  Address : 192.168.16.11

External Nic
IP: 192.168.16.10
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.16.1
DNS: 192.168.16.2
Wins: Blank
Netbios over TCP/IP disable

Internal Nic
IP: 192.168.16.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: Blank
DNS: 192.168.16.2
Wins: 192.168.16.2
Netbios over TCP/IP disable

The problem is when I go to DHCP setup, DHCP name is mycompanyserver.local 𖐸.168.16.10] instead of 192.168.16.2

Create a new DHCP scope with the correct range. If I am not mistaken rerunning the CEICW should take care of this.

c. DHCP setup. Click on Start...Administrative Tools...DHCP.
Address Pool: 192.168.16.0 to 192.168.16.254
Scope Options:

Hi Nickie,

You have a few threads going on about the same subject. The ipconfig you have posted in this thread, shows you are having both servernics in the same IP range. That will never work: Two Nics, a static IP address, ISA, router

Hello,  My name is Sharon

I wouldn't say I am a newbie, but I have some experience in networking and routing.  I have a small office and have purchased SBS 2003.  I have the following in my environment Cable modem with ISP assigned static address, purchase a static IP from the ISP which they are telling me to place on my router which is a linksys G.  I also have a non-managed netgear 16 port switch.
  1. no help from the ISP on where to place my other static IP on the router or on the SBS 2003 server
  2. Internal configuration is currently - Cable from the ISP router to the Switch.  Netgear Switch to the linksys wireless router. 2 nics in my SBS one connected to the ISP router and other is connected to the netgear switch.
  3. Can not get my clients to see my server and join the domain.  Know that this is configuration on the backbone, need help.
A new smallbusiness owner with lot to do and have already spent weeks and money to get this running I am tapped and tired.  can I get some help?

Hello Sharon, I'm getting a little confused here? What I'm reading is: You've got an ISP Cable Modem, ISP Router, LinksysG router and a netgear switch? I think you've got a cable modem from your ISP and a linksysg router and a netgear switch? Setup should be:
  1. Connect a cable from the ISP cable modem to the isp router (wan interface and configure the static ip adress on this interface).
  2. Connect a cable from your ISP router to the external nic from your sbs server  (ip router 192.168.1.1 ? and assign an ip adress in this range say 192.168.1.10 to the external nic of the sbs server and set the default gateway on the external nic to 192.168.1.1).
  3. Disable DHCP on the router.
  4. Connect the internal nic of the sbs server to the netgear switch and setup DHCP do not use the 192.168.1.* subnet for this. (choose for example 10.10.10.1 to 10.10.10.254 as the internal subnet and assign 10.10.10.1 to the internal nic on the sbs)
  5. Connect the clients to the netgear switch and if DHCP is setup right then they should get an address assigned.

So the setup would look something like this:

I'm setting up my SBS network according to the diagram 'Two Nics, a static IP address, ISA, router.'  However, when I try to change the scope to 192.168.16.0 to 192.168.16.154 - I get an error message of "Error - the starting address is not valid. Make sure that the host ID is not 0'. Any ideas?

With 192.168.16.0 is used to define the whole subnet 192.168.16.1 to 192.168.16.254. Just change this to 192.168.16.1 to 192.168.16.253 (254 is the broadcast address). and it should work fine.

Kind Regards,

I had my network setup with one NIC, static IP, linksys vpn router to connect to my remote sites, all was working well except that I get 10060 errors when downloading email through the pop3 connector. So I thought I would try the two NIC setup. When I do this all is well except my remote sites cannot access the exchange server, this is when I remove the gateway setting from the now internal NIC and enable the external NIC. I tried to change this by configuring the outlook client to look at the external IP address of the SBS server rather than the internal (192.168.16.2) but still no joy. I have reverted to one NIC and reset the internal NIC gateway however I still get my pop problems, which I am sure is due to only using one NIC. I tried to use the ISA server wizard for secure mail but it will not run for outlook clients if exchange is on the same server as ISA 2000. Any suggestions as to how to resolve the remote sites working with two NICs or resolving the timeout problems with the pop3 connector. Thanks

Thanks for the reply.  I made the changes as suggested (192.168.16.1...192.168.16.253) and now I get the error message of "The specified range either overlaps an existing range or is not valid."

Ideas?

Hi Tony,

ISA will not work in firewall mode if you only have 1 nic. Decide what you want to use and then give us the ipconfig/all from the server and a client.

Hi William,

Please elaborate. Post the ipconfig/all from the server and how many scopes do you have in DHCP server??

Hi William,

The external nic is not good as it is in the same subnet as your internal nic. You should change the internal IP range or the external IP range. When you want to change the internal IP range, use the Change IP wizard which will automagically configure, DHCP, WINS and DNS.
The external nic should have DNS pointing to the internal nic IP ONLY.
But you even have a bigger problem, as your local AD domain name hasn't got the .local addy. When was this box setup?

 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1, 205.171.3.65 is wrong. That should be only 192.168.0.111

I tried that (changing the DNS IP to 192.168.0.111) but then I wasn't able to access the Internet.

Hi Marina,

The box was set-up several months ago.  How do I run the Change IP wizard?
