Hi William,

The Change IP wizard can be found on the Internet and Email node in Servermanagement. And don't forget to change the DNS (Domain Name Server) on the external nic. Then rerun CEICW (Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard).

Just to be certain that I have this;  From Server Management, choose Change Server IP Address?  Will this also allow me to change the scope or do I then have to do that?  After the Internal NIC IP has been changed (along with the scope) I then need to change the DNS (Domain Name Server) setting on the external NIC?

Almost: How to change the server IP address It will change everything for you, DHCP, DNS (Domain Name Server) and WINS. After that CEICW (Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard).

OK so just to recap my problem, I had problems popping my email into microsoft exchange so I reconfigured to two NICs. I had remote access to my exchange server but now this has gone as they can no longer see the exchange serve on the internal network. The server default gateway is now the external NIC.

My network is now configured external ip ---- Small Business Server -----internal clients, servers and linksys VPN gateway ------- external clients. I share other network services on the internal network with the external clients. Is there any way I can configure the network so that my external clients can use outlook to access the exchange server (in server rather than POP mode) and access the shares on the Small Business Server machine? My ipconfigs are as follows:-

Hello Mariëtte,
I've installed everything exactly as explained on http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=154
I cannot access the internet form the workstations.
I can ping IP addresses but I cannot ping IP names.
So I added an outside DNS (Domain Name Server) server on a workstation and it worked fine.
Have I forgotten to configure someting on the server.
I read something about "." zone ?? to have this deleted ?

Please can you help?

Regards Kirk

My ipconfigs are as follows
Hi Tony,

It is not completely right. the server has an additional dns co.uk in the search list that shouldn't be there. It is missing WINS on the internal nic. The external nic should point to the sbs internal IP ONLY in stead of the 2 foreign dns numbers. The clients are getting the wrong information from the dhcp server. Correct the DHCP options on the server. The ipconfig of the remote office doesn't make sense to me.

Hi Kirk,

Please post the ipconfig/all from the server and a client and please start a new thread with that.

Hello Marina,

Sorry, cannot find out for the life of me how to start a new thread. I'm very new to forums. My IPconfig /all on server and workstation are attached in a TXT file. (Also could not find out how to paste into this thread). How can I get the workstations to work without having to add an outside DNS (Domain Name Server).
Regards Kirk

Hi Kirk,

Your ipconfig is wrong. The internal nic should have NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled. The external nic should not have the foreign DNS (Domain Name Server). The 006 option in DHCP server, Scope options should point to the internal server IP.

Hello Marina,

I've changed everything as you said. Deleted the external DNS (Domain Name Server) and enabled Netbios over TCP/IP on the internal IP. Did not need to change the 006 in DHCP as this was already set for the ineternal nic.   Now it's the same as before. I cannot get to any web pages. IP addresses is fine - I can also ping them - but IP names is not working - Hence browser not seeing anything.   Attached in TXT is the new ipconfig /all after the changes.

Regards
Kirk

Hi Kirk,

Ipconfigs are looking good now. Did you rerun CEICW (Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard) after it? What did you fill in for the DNS (Domain Name Server) numbers? Can you access the internet from the server? Is ISA installed?

Hi Tony,

Double check the advanced properties of the TCP/IP on both nics, tab DNS (Domain Name Server). There shouldn't be any dns suffix there.

Hi,
I've being going though the posts here but cant quite figure out what to do with my issue.

I have taken over a server running SBS2K3 with EXACTLY the setup as shown in the diagram for 'Two Nics, a static IP address, ISA, router'. Everything is working perfectly and has been for a while.

However, i now need to allow a remote user access to a computer (not the server) on the network using PC anywhere.
Having a problem with this getting the computer to be seen as a host on the router in the NAT.
While trying to solve this up I came across the following:

DHCP is enabled on the router. It assigns a dynamic IP address 192.168.1.16 to the external NIC.
DHCP is also enabled on SBS server and it assigns all dynamic IP addresses to the client computers.

Is this recommended ? Although is works fine, it appears not from what I read.
Should I disable the DHCP on the router and assign a static IP address to the external NIC. If yes, can I use the 192.168.1.16 IP as the static address ?
Obviously I don't want to mess up something that is working fine.

Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

This will work fine as long as the router doesn't assign a different ip address to the external nic of the sbs server.
Why would you use pc anywhere? just create a useraccount for the external user and allow him/her access to
the remote web workspace. then he/she can install the activex component to remotely control the windows xp machine. If the problem is that it's not an xp machine.. well then maybe you should consider an upgrade/reinstall.
If this is not an option you need to configure the sbs server to forward the pcanywhere ports.
the ports pcanywhere uses are 5631-5632 and if it's an xp machine you need to open the ports on the firewall on
xp as well.
If there is a router inbetween you and the two nic SBS, you need to 'forward' the ports to the internal NIC of the SBS, and THEN forward 'those' ports to the IP address inside the network.  For Standard, you open up the Routing and Remote Access program and add your ports there.  For ISA...well let's just say I'm still learning ISA 2004..it's in there somewhere.
Just don't forget to run the Connect to Internet wizard on the server to open up what you need on the inside, and then do the necessary port forwarding on the outside.
will look if there's a description for the isa part and get back to you on that..

Oh and just to be sure... make the ip adress on the nic static and you can use the same address as was assigned to it by dhcp.

Kind regards,
Rene Leussink

Hi Kevin,

If you are using private IP ranges on the external nic, better make the external nic static. Make sure that the IP you assign to the external nic is excluded in the router in its DHCP config. The servernics are in different IP ranges, right?
Also, you don't need PcNowhere when the clients are using XP as OS. So you don't need to open another port for that program. Simply use RWW which enables users to connect to an XP workstation.

Hi Rene and Marina,

Many thanks for the prompt reply.
Unfortunately my hands are tied regarding PCAnywhere - long story - I originally suggested RWW as the easiest option but this is not an option for the company requiring access.

Yes, the servernics are in different IP ranges Marina.
I've made the external nic static as suggested and disabled the DHCP on the router and everything is working fine.
Now I just need to use the Routing and Remote program (I'm not using ISA BTW) to forward on the ports.

Thanks again,
Kevin

I have the same setup as Kevin does - but with a wireless capability on the dsl router.  I have enabled the DHCP capability on the router to allow assignment of addresses to wireless clients in a range from say 192.1658.0.20 - 192.168.0.50 and the SBS2003 server has an address of 192.168.0 2.

The wireless provides WPA-PSK security but I can't seem to connect using the "remote" features of the SBS.  I have SP1 installed on the SBS2003 server with ISA 2004 running.  If i use a VPN connection everything works fine - but I also have to "define" the "internal" lan to get connectivity.  Also won't let me talk to the companyweb etc.

Am I doing somthing wrong?

Robert Dye

Hi Robert,

Please post the ipconfig/all from the server and a client. If you have ISA installed, you must have 2 nics in the server. I think you have them in the same IP range, which will never work: Two Nics, a static IP address, ISA, router

Hi Marina/All,

I am working with a client who has all of the aforementioned setup of the static IP, router and 2 nics but not ISA.  It is running on standard edition.  I cannot for the life of me get the DCHP Server to conect.  It keeps giving me the error of
"The DHCP Server service is not running on the target computer".  I went through and confirmed that it is installed.
It is working like this:

Netgear Firewall/Router
IP: ISP assigned
Subnet Mask: ISP assigned
gateway: ISP
Static DNS: ISP
Static ISP

Local IP (of Router): 192.168.1.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.1

NIC card to router
IP: 192.168.1.10
Sub: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1 (that of the Router)
Perfered DNS: 192.168.16.2

Internal NIC (going to network)
ip: 192.168.16.2
sub: 255.255.255.0
Pererred DNS: 192.168.16.2

I basically followed the diagram for the ISA, but apparently I must of missed a step or not done something due to not haveing the premium.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Thanks!
