hI.

wE INSTALLED A NEW eXCHANGE sERVER 2007 and new Domain Controller with new DNS settings and left the old DC for a month on the network. We have been having problems with LAN speed from clients to the File Server (Windows 2000 Server) and Oracle Server (W2K3 Server) as well as slow network printing. We have cat5e cabling and two 'older' switches and one new 24 port HP switch.

I have a feeling the routing between the switches are slowing LAN speed down and they are close to capacity.

Please can someone advise on where exactly the problem could be as this is becoming unbearable.

Thank you.

Hi Chris,

Please, post an ipconfig /all from all the servers and a workstation. Open a command prompt by opening Start -> Run from the Start Menu and type cmd. From the command prompt type ipconfig /all >ip.txt. Attach this file to your answer.

Hi Chris,

On the database server you need to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP. You also need to add WINS.
On the domain controler you need to add WINS.
Is the Exchange server really an additional DC?? Why? You still need to add WINS.
On the file server you have a wrong WINS.
On the workstations you are also missing WINS, which you should add in the DHCP server scope options.
Where is SBS in this story?

Hi thank you for your prompt answer.

I disabled Netbios over TCPIP on database server and the connection for clients is not disrupted, must i enable it again? If you have DNS why do you need WINS? Will this make the LAN faster and is it the same IP as DNS then? Yes the Exchange Server is a backup DC because I do not have SBS in this network all Servers are Windows 2003.  Will the workstations have a faster connection to Servers and services if I add the WINS address?

Hi Chris,

What is the reason for disabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP on the database server. WINS is still needed for Exchange.
